Microsoft and Sandisk Jointly Develop New Flash OS

Sandisk and Microsoft are teaming up to release a new USB flash-drive operating system in the second half of 2008.

Microsoft will develop the software and Sandisk will develop compatible hardware for flash drives and flash-memory cards.Microsoft has approached several third-party hardware vendors to licence the technology and the two firms will create a new entity to license compatible hardware.

The new system will replace the U3 operating system which is backed by names such as Kingston, PNY and Imation. Software developers who wrote applications for U3 drives will be offered a migration path to modify their U3 programs for use on the new operating system.

As part of the deal, Sandisk gets to use its TrustedFlash security technology and enhanced integration with Windows.

I was just about to buy a bargain priced 4GB U3 stick.

Will the current U3 sticks be able to get the new OS on to them: 1) for compatibility; 2) at a price of zero ?

I have a 4GB U3 Toshiba flash stick, it's the best I've owned period. I just hope Sandisk get their stuff together for this project, as I've had 2 of their Cruzer drives become unreadable in a very short space of time.
