Metro Dev Responds to PC Boycott Claims

Not at all surprising, certain game developers have been saying for years that PC is barely a viable market for them, and that with current financials many developers are already sacrificing PC versions in favour of focussing on consoles for the first year or so because of the heavy losses associated with AAA PC releases and little profit.

If the one thing that can keep many developers on PC is being boycotted by the PC market then I don't see why all but the most popular of developers would stick around.

It is a shame....
As much as I hate to say it an easy fix would be for Microsoft to step in and offer use of the windows store included in the licence fee for DirectX. This would solve a big part of this issue.
I love my steam account, but I do not like valve they are the worst for support, customer service and actually providing what their customers want. They have held the monopoly on PC gaming for so long that it will be a good few years until I could dream of retiring steam for an all in one solution. I don't like that we have so many different stores and launchers now. You don't see PS4 players having to log into different services to access their entire library and play with friends and I think its high time that something happens to stop this massive segmentation.

There are no royalty fees for using DirectX, it's free for a developer to use commercially as desired.
Developers avoidance of Windows Store is primarily because of the work required to launch a game on there in terms of all the specific APIs & conformities required, as well as the fact many PC users are still on Windows 7, amongst other things, though things will change as said APIs have more layer/libraries developed for them to make use by smaller devs possible & the APIs more common place. After that they still have some cleaning up to do for it to be a good platform for games, but it's certainly came a long way recently.

Did not know that, thanks for info.
Does Microsoft not get a cut from games on Windows then?

Nothing because it has always been a traditional Operating System for a open platform.

The games they sell on the windows store probably has a cut assigned to Microsoft, but everything else on any other store is royalty free.

I don't know what all those people want?! Every pre-order on Steam will be fulfilled, so what's the problem? I don't like the Epic Store as well, but heck, I even installed Games For Windows Live back then, although nobody needs anything else than Steam.
Every other store is just a cheap ripoff, that either has no achievements to unlock or poor usability or lacks something else that Valve managed to develop over the years. Steam was buggy crap that turned into a proper storefront, but Uplay and Origin and the likes are just a big yikes for me.

Steam had indeed grown into a proper storefront, and then decided to open up the floodgates to everything without curating and quality control and that in itself has caused so many problems for Indies that get their games pushed down the front page by asset flipping products, scams and a whole lot of other crap games.

Valve's hands off approach is a good reason why many big names started to drop steam in favor of their own software or another store with better cuts or less crap around them. Steam's large user base is a big thing, and it does help with sales of lesser known titles, but really.. in this day and age i wouldn't call steam a proper store front with how much they have ruined it over the years.

Yeah to me Steam feels very outdated for an online store front, the biggest feature for me is Workshop support though the Epic launcher also has built in mod support for UE4 games, but most others don't anything similar. Besides that though, I never really had much of a problem with Origin, it was pretty small and snappy without any clutter and while it was light on features it still felt like a complete platform for playing games. I get some people really like the community aspects of Steam and that can be useful for indies games and stuff but for larger titles Steam is abit messy, especially when many games already have their own ID/login system for crossplay and such now which are generally already integrated into these more curated/studio focussed launchers.

This is all utterly, utterly ridiculous. Such a shame as it mars one of the biggest launches in ages.

From the people who played they absolutely love the game

Shame we have dipsh*** in the gaming community who like to bash a game studio for something they don't have control over and they don't bother to do research. I hate the gaming community tbh. Almost as toxic as the modern left

There is a reason i never play any competitive game anymore, or team games and i dropped mmo's for the most part as well, the communities in them is just getting worse and worse.

Dude I couldn't agree more. I've been a PC gamer since the Commodore 64 days and these last 10 years or so, yeah this community of ours is the angriest, most bitter bunch of people I've seen.

Maybe it's because most of us weren't the cool kids in high school so we're mad at the world or something... I don't know but it's gotten ridiculous.

I remember first seeing it around 09....Crysis 1: stupid game, so demanding nobody can play it at max settings. Crysis 2: stupid Crytek sold out and made the graphics less demanding.

I honestly can't think of a single major pc game in the last several years that didn't get a bunch of nerdrage about something.

This is the tantrum generation so I guess it's fitting but with us being 5% of the gaming market, it's probably not too smart running around calling for boycotts every time a developer does something we don't agree with especially when it's something as minor as what retailer their game is sold from. Eventually they will get tired of the negative press and push back and just concentrate on the other 95% of their customers.

Games like Fortnite etc are bringing in younger gamers. That, coupled with the fact that a lot of people are ditching consoles for PC gaming and yeah, issues.

We may have been bought up with computers but we had social lives. These days? Kids are handed tablets and phones and encouraged to do nothing. No wonder they have social problems.

All that said? I've never gamed online competitively once ever. I've always stuck to co op with friend/s.
