memory speed

currently using a 4gig (2X2) 800mhz speed T2(4-4-4-9 @ 1.9 volts) of ram with a 1:1 ratio... Now planning to use a 16gig(2X2)1200mhz ram T2 w/ 5-5-5-15 @ 1.8 volts and my mobo is design to handle that speed so np for compatability (X38 chipset). I have a C2D E8400 @3.60 @1600fsb currently @ no voltage increase at all...

Now the question:

1. Will I see any performance gain if I switch to 1200mhz speed?

2. I don't think my cpu can go head to head w/ a 1200mhz so what ratio I should have in order to benefit on 1200mhz?

3. What fsb I will be getting if I reach a 1:1 ratio w/ a 1200mhz?

4. If I miss any important question to ask feel free to share your ideas T.Y. in advance....

wow this is just great... a question being answer w/ another question... all you guys do is clutter this thread

I'm confused by the 4gig (2X2) and the 16gig(2X2). What capacity are you planning on changing to?

As far as your questions go:

Disclaimer: I'm so familiar with the i7 platform now that this may be wrong lol

1. only in memory benchmarks. Real world, probably none

2. 2:3

3. 600 or 2400 (quad)

4. See question I started post with.

Yeah, see that a lot here lately. People tend to get their panties knotted if they don't get instant help. I think TTL needs to give us all a raise here at OC3D tech support.

Right now I currently have two stick of ram 2X2gig (800mhz) but planning to replace it w/ 4 stick of 2X2gig for a total of 16gig (1200mhz)

But thanks a lot for answering my question.

I get what you are saying now 16GB (4x4 gig) is what you meant.

Any reason for that amount of ram? I only ask to make sure you aren't getting it for gaming, but for some specialized software like CAD or commercial video/photo editing or possibly running some VMs.

You'll be lucky to achieve the same clock with all the memory slots filled, but 1600 FSB would need a 3:2 divider on the RAM for 1200MHz. To get a 1200MHz 1:1 clock you would need an FSB of 600x4 which is 2400MHz. Giving you a CPU speed at the same multi of 5.4GHz.

The motherboard is very unlikely to be stable at much over 500MHz, and the with the slots occupied a 3.6GHz is pretty optimistic.

First tym I was introduced to p.c. was 4 yrs. ago and I asked my cousin (this guy went to school for computer) what hardware to buy. I bought a P4 3.0 HT, 2gig 533mhz dual channel ram, and a 256 megabyte video card is all I need to play any games for p.c. he said. everything cost me $1600... then disaster comes, HD movies available for download "WHAT i CAN'T PLAY IT IN MY SYSTEM?" ... Crysis came out "WHAT THE HECK!!! I CAN'T GAME ON THIS?" He told me I have a very very fast system and yet it reached its limit after having it in a few months SIGH. then he told me my p.c. is slow because I have a 300gig hdd. He said its too big, you only need like 80gig.. I gave that computer away... Now I have a 7 terabyte and p.c. is fast and also almost full... My point is I just wanted to be future proof I'm tired replacing a hardware that's why I wanted to get the fastest ram 1200mhz... If I just saved all those money I spent in computer I could a have a system w/ a six core cpu another SIGH... Its one of my many flaws. I always wanted the best... Sorry guys for being so bitter...

1200MHz RAM is pretty slow by todays standards. With a new CPU, Mobo supporting DDR3 and DDR3 Ram, 2000MHz is possible. You are better off spending the money on something better, unless you need more than 4GB RAM. Also smack your cousin for telling you that the HD is the reason the PC is slow.

Sounds like you go miss sold the GPU as the memory on the card is kind of irrelevant if the core GPU is slow.

lol 1200mhz aint slow lol and it could be overclocked, yes there are faster speeds but not many.

heck i still had 800mhz up until a month ago

You do have a point specially knowing myself. Maybe in 5 yrs. from now ddr3 will be obsolete. I should just save the little money I have to buy me a lot better system later. Thanks again!!!
