Memory problem :(

Right, firstly I have a Dell (get your laughing out the way) 2400 and until yesterday had only the 256 that came with it. I decided to get 512 from Scan and put it in yesterday, bit it's only reading it as 256.

I pissed about in bios and thought i might be able to change it from 'single' to 'duel', but it was having none of it.

I've tried taking out the old ram and leaving the new one in, and it drops back to 256.

It's annoying knowing that I should have 768 RAM but stuck with 512. I checked and it supposed to be able to handle two 512 sticks.

Any suggestions?

check in the BIOS that your AGP aperature isnt being set to somethng high (unlikely cause but worth a try)

change the slots you are using for the ram, how many ram slots do you have? can we have some more system specs please?

where is it only reading as 256mb? windows or BIOS?

a tad more info mate and this shd be sorted :)

Or maybe they just pwned u and sent you a 256mb stick of ram... Why not just return it for replacement and see if the new stick u get doesn't sort the problem?

I've used Scan many times, they are fine.

I've moved the ram around, there are 2 slots. It's supposed to be able to handle 1 gig (as you'd expect from two slots) which of course would be 2 x 512.

Spec? nothing fantastic, 2.6 gig, 260gb, (should be 768 ram) but showing 512, 128 graphics.

In windows it shows as just 512 as it also does in the dell start up/bios.

At first I thought the ram speeds were different and it was only reading the 512 stick, but it's not.

Someone mentioned something about a jumper, thoughts?

Annoyingly I have a degree in Information and Internet technology, but this has me stumped (embarrisingly)!

you mentioned about changiong something from single to dual. dual channel requires identical sticks of ram and so you can only run single channel.

get a copy of cpu-z from here

http://www.cyborgownersgroup.com/sxdownload/cpu-z-129.zip

install only your new stick of ram and go to the SPD tab in cpu-z, and in the drop down box select your stick. There should be a box tht says module size. tell us what this says.

i re-read your first post and intially i thought u meant something different, but now i see that this stick will only read as 256mb whatever, and it is becoming increasingly likely tht scan have sent you a wrong stick.

dont worry this is not a problem, tell them what has happened and they will pay for return postage etc. but let us know how cpu-z goes first.

Hmm, they are not identical sticks of ram. Used the program, showing slot 1 (the 512) as 256. I checked the ram, it has the 512 sticker on etc. :(

That's because the stick has been mismarked from the factory, don't sweat it, it happens all the time.

Call them up and explain what happened, i'm sure they will hook you up with the correct stuff.

yeah just a slight problem, usually happens with generic ram. when you get in contact with scan, if you have to, link them to this thread just to prove what you have tried :)

good luck with the rma, generally scan are good guys, i would worry
