MAXIMUS IV GENE-Z/GEN3 PCI-e 3.0 support?

QuietOne

always shouting
As the title says, I own one and have just installed my new GTX 780 and GPU-Z is showing that my PCI-e is running at x16 2.0. My card is in the top slot and my soundcard is in the only PCI-e x4 slot. But the board is supposed to be PCI-e 3.0 ready.

I have flashed the latest MB BIOS so I was wondering if I'm missing something and if I'm missing out on more performance that I would get on PCI-e 3.0?

open up a movie or windowed game you will see your gpu jump to PCIE:3 x16 X1

when its just idling in gpuz it downclocks as it doesn't need anything like 3d or even pcie 3 bandwidth, its normal you can also use the built in benchmark on gpuz to get it to change aswell :D

on my 7950 mine downclocks to pcie 1.1 ill see if i can get some screenies up

i.e currently mine is showing PCI:E 3.0 X16 @X16 PCI:E 1.1 if you click the ? next to it then click Run render test it will ramp up to full speed :D
Before render test validation
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/3hqd8/
then show the true speed of your card in my case it it change's like this >

PCI:E 3.0X16 @16X PCI:E 3.0
with render test running validation >
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/awxdv/

you can see the difference basicly its just your gpu's power saving features it does not need to be running at 3.0 bandwidth for basic things it will use 3.0 in gaming or hd movies or anything that requires complex shaders/3d :D

Thanks for the reply UkGouki. When mine is idle it goes down to pcie 1.1 4x but when I launch blender test in gpu-z it bumps it up to pcie 2.0 X16. I'm working today but ill have a look in my BIOS and stuff when I get home and see what I can find :)

oh i forgot about bios i had to manually set my pci:e to 3.0 and switch off lucid/intel onboard gpu, from your cpuz screenie it looks like you have lucid/ intel gpu enabled...

If you are running an i7 2700k like your cpu-z validator suggests, it is totally normal that your only running @ pci-e 2.0 x 16 since 3.0 is not supported by sandy bridge.

That'll be why then. I am using sandy bridge 2700k. Thanks for your response, FTR. So I would need ivy bridge instead. Ill stick with my current one for now. I will probably move away from matx one day.

You would need a 3rd gen intel cpu and a new mobo also in order to support pci-e 3.0.
IIRC Sandy Bridge E (2011) also runs pci-e 3.0.

But imo no need to upgrade just for pci-e 3.0, its not worth it. You will only notice a minor difference to any at all.

EDIT: forget what i said about your mobo since it is a gen 3 board ;)

If the difference isn't that noticeable then I'll leave it for now. Going from a GTX 580 to a 780 is a big step up for me anyway :) thanks for your help guys.
