Malaysia Airlines plane shot down over Ukraine

Sometime yesterday Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has crashed in the Ukraine and was apparently shot down while flying at a cruising altitude of 33,000ft. The two factions in conflict (Ukrainian Government vs. (?)Revolutionaries/Seperatists(?)) both claim that they were not responsible and their respective opponents were the ones shooting down the plane.

So far there's not much information about this, except that reports say that all crew and passengers died.

I've used the search function and didn't find a similar thread so I decided to open one up.

If someone stumbles upon new information / is from the area / wants to share a conspiracy theory, this is the thread to do it then, I guess.

It is definitely not the Ukrainian Government that shot the plane down for one simple reason -

The rebels don't have aircraft.

It would have been nice if all the news media had pointed out the obvious last night.

I agree that it makes little sense to shoot down a rebel aircraft if they don't have any. However this > http://voiceofrussia.com/news/2014_...trol-of-Ukrainian-anti-air-installation-1561/ < was quite popular in the news lately. If the Ukranian government shot down the plane, they could easily claim it was by rebels and point out that they have the equipment needed to do so.

Also apparently one eyewitness claims the plane was shot down by a jet. Nothing of the sort could be confirmed however and eyewitnesses are known to be very unreliable sources.

There would be little point at the moment in the Ukranian government doing the above. If anything this is a bit of a disaster for them, on the ground they were on the offensive and were taking back territory but now this has happened it will bring things to a halt giving the rebels time to dig in and resupply.

Illuminati, the pope did it.

Edit: Although that was meant as a joke, the situation isn't a joke, sorry.

I read about that yesterday, there was reported that is was the soviet version of a surface to air missile that originally took down the plane, whether that was an initial rumour or not, I am not sure of though.

I think that the Americans would very much like to believe the Russians did it, however their media seems to be mentioning the possibility of terrorism far more than any other. It seems odd that two Malaysian Airlines flights have gone down in a relatively short time period.

Voice Of Russia is really not a good source imo.

My personal opinion is that it was the rebels shooting it down by mistake. They've already shot a few Ukrainian aircraft down and to the untrained eye I guess you could misinterpret a Boeing for a Russian made transport. I still think it is air to ground because if it was Air to Air the plane's radar would have picked up the jet approaching it. The Ukrainian Air force's inventory doesn't have anything that could have the stealth properties to sneak up on it. The fact that it was only flying 1000 m above the no-fly zone just makes it seem like an accident to me :I. I guess it could have been a Ukrainian soldier mis-identifying it as well.

Such a sad occasion :(.

The Russians left a lot of military hardware around all over the place, they also seem to be readily available for sale to foreign countries also, be it through legitimate ways, or via the black market, so it could very easily be one of the 2 battling sides that have done it.

True say, I guess it is just a monumental coincident but I can't see them selling many more flights now.

Did anyone see that guy in America who asked 'Is this going to affect the supply of Kalashnikov AK47's in the US' and then the woman actually attempted to answer it. WTF muricans, 300+ people just died and your worried about if you can get enough automatic weapons  I do very much like Americans and their brashness but they normally become all sensitive when their citizens have been killed.

Kaapstad is right. The Ukranian Government have no reason to point up, however the Rebels do.

I'll wait until the EU investigate the crash site before casting an opinion though. All I'll say is that this is a messy situation, so many dead.

The world is a dangerous place and right now it seems to be becoming more dangerous.
Malaysia Airlines are sure taking a hit in reputation right now, I don't think it'd be far fetched if they changed their name soon. Of course they are not to be blamed for the incident, indirectly however... All major airlines are avoiding to fly over crisis-areas like this, but Malaysia Airlines decided to plot the route through there anyways, because it is cheaper than to fly around. A decision which has cost quite a few lives... => not good PR

They have found the black box apparently, they are saying Russia armed the rebels, that it was a Russian version of SAM that downed the plane, and everyone is denying responsibility for it.

Such a sad state of affairs, there was apparently 9 British football fans amongst the dead. What I see as problem now this has happened, I can see the UN moving in and that means American and British armed forces putting themselves in the line of fire again :(

Source; Live reports about the downed aircraft

At the very least it's adding kerosine to the fire that is the tension between the Ukraine and Russia right now...

Apparently over 100 of the world's leading HIV/AIDS experts and researchers were on board.
