Major Comp Problem - Can't Install Drivers

I have a 6600gt. I turned my computer on yesterday morning, and the screen resolution was set to 640x480 with 4 bit colour, and it would not let me change it in display options. It also seemed that the nvidia drivers had disappeared, I had no icon in the system tray.

I checked program files and all the drivers which I expected to be in Program Files/Nvidia were all just in Program Files, in no real folder structure.

So I installed the drivers again, rebooted, managed to get normal res/colour, but the nvidia icon was still not in the system tray, and it seemed there was no trace of the drivers on my system. When I rebooted, I got straight back to 640x480 with 4 bit colour.

So I tried using driver cleaner, and reinstalled the drivers, and got exactly the same situation as above. As soon as I reboot with nvidia drivers installed, I get 4 bit colour.

So next I tried going into device manager, and uninstalling display drivers from there. This was kind of stupid, because when I rebooted, windows would not start and it just got caught in a restarting loop, even in safe mode.

So at this point I went and backed up what I could on downstairs PC, and then "repaired" my windows installation. Once I was back at desktop, I got the same old problem as soon as I tried to install nvidia drivers.

I am now at a loss at what to do, I cannot even start counterstrike, or im sure any other game. I am stuck 50:50 as to whether it is hardware problems or a software problem. Is a full reformat the only way?

Anybody come across any problem like this before? I would have thought that a repair install would fix anything majorly messed up, but thinking about it I suppose a lot could still be corrupted in the install. The thing which makes me think hardware, is that it was suddenly like it when I turned my computer on yesterday morning, but fine when I shut it down the night before.

Blurt some ideas at me people...I need some help, this is driving me crazy being sat at a computer which isnt working as well as it should.

Try yanking your video card and putting in a PCI card. Then wipe the drivers and hardware profiles in device manager and start from the beginning like you are installing ur 6600 for the first time. Hope ya get it sorted mate!

Frag - I dont have a spare card

Ham - yes, 3 differnt types of officials and also 3rd party from DNA

Youve prob tryed everything i can think of.

Have you got any old cards atall?

And is it AGP or PCIe?

Hmm, as far as im aware windows wouldn't have very good PCI-e drivers, if any?

Was the card overclocked? (prob a silly question i know but..) I would have tought the worst if a windows repair didn't fix it. Have you got riva tuner or anything like that installed that could be tampering with the drivers?

Are you able to do a windows reinstall mate? TBH, its probably the first thing i'd do. I can't be bothered spending days trying to fix things, when a reinstall normally does the trick in under 30 minutes.

And if a re-install doesn't fix it, then u know for 100% certainty that its hardware.

U should really invest in a spare pci vid card mate. Its the one spare piece of hardware I wouldn't dare be without.

I'm almost certain if u were to take out the card and delete all traces u could fix the problem or end up finding out that the card is buggered.

Since u don't have a spare card go with Jim's suggestion and format the sucka.

god i hate formatting, the reason i didnt do it was that i was planing on buying a new hard drive and reformtat when i got that. maybe i shd buy it anyway, format onto that and then i will know for sure.

That sounds like the most feasible route for you to take at this point dave. Hope ur vid card isn't fucked.

shuduppa your face

pfft, calm down. Have you tried manually uninstalling the drivers using device manager? and have your tried manually installing the drivers using the same way? what does Windows recognise the card as?
