Machine_check_exception

Which is a BSOD kinda error which I`m having on a pc that I understand can be one of the following:

• System bus errors

• Memory errors that may include parity or Error Correction Code (ECC) problems

• Cache errors in the processor or hardware

• Translation Lookaside Buffers (TLB) errors in the processor

• Other CPU-vendor specific detected hardware problems

• Vendor-specific detected hardware problems

The PC consists of:

Abit AV8, 3800x2 (@2300 default oc atm), 2G (2x1g of something @ 128, biosed as DDR333, clocked to just about DDR400), XFX7600GT 610/1.5, SBLive 5.1, 2x160g Raid0

1st sign of any issue was sound going crackling during a heavy load. Re-imagining the windows install did nothing to the issue, so something hardware is afoot.

2nd sign of a problem was the only game installed on it (Medieval Total War 2) having been fine for months would wig-out during a battle. To be fair to the game, if u try to run it at too high a setting it would historically try and do what u set it at but just slow everything down.-- however now it will quit saying the settings "may" be too high, this is out of character.

However I found out that the fan on the XFX had ceased to rotate - by noticing on exiting the game it was cooling down from/thru 80+ (where it would normally go no higher than 70 with oc). I`ve got it going again, but since this the game exits with the remark above.

The mobo ~seems~ to not like booting to cd from time to time. I can burn to it 100% fine. However clearing the bios to failsafe settings seem to boot ok so meh. Also selective cds will boot every time.

Copying files today, the pc came to a complete standstill with a pitched whine coming from the soundcard - been there b4, can`t remember why.

Bareing this in mind, the BSOD, I can check out the memory, something overheating can be easily explained - especially as reading into the likes of wiki on this exception, it can be any piece of hardware it`s just the cpu reports it.

Bus errors would impact a number of devices - reasonable, similarly cache errors.

The pc will run 3DMark06 without a problem. It will fold on both cores with no problem. If u do try getting it to do stuff whilst these things are happening, like unraring or copying files - then u get an issue.

Guess I`m throwing this out to see if any1 had this exception b4 and it`s been the same thing every time. Coz as it stands the problem could be one of many components.

Regards.

Machine Check Exceptions do my head in. When I moved to s939 and XP I used my SBLive soundcard (not the 5.1 version though) from my previous computer (worked perfectly on W98). It installed ok and I don't remember having sound problems, but opening any of the Creative applets (AudioHQ, Soundfont, etc) immediately caused a Machine Check Exception similar to this one (I still have it bookmarked lol). The solution was not to open any Creative applets  which I just learned to live with until I bought a X-Fi.

Based on that, the only thing I can suggest is to remove the soundcard, use Driver Cleaner, then see if you still get Machine Check Exceptions. Then put the card back in, install the latest drivers and lookout for them again.

p.s. Have a look through the Creative forums, usually any SB problems are fairly common / well documented. :( These bookmarks are for Audigy 2 cards but the problems sound similar to what you are experiencing.

Anyway, good luck :)
