Mach II mounting plate woes

After getting my shiny Mach II the other week, i wasnt entirely happy with the temps and overclock i was getting on my A64 3500.

Lots of chatting to other forum members it seemed that i wasnt getting sufficient contact on the cpu.

So i started to loosen the bolts off slowly one turn at a time on each of them until i'd got the left hand one out - it was then that alarm bells started to ring!!!!! THE RIGHT HAND BOLT WAS JUST TURNING AND TURNING :(

After about 10 minutes of head scratching and splinters, i came to the conclusion that the pole from the mounting plate had sheared off, so decided to bite the bullet and pull the head off.

Sure enough there it was - still screwed into the bolt was the pole sheared straight off from the mounting plate, and try as i might - i couldnt remove the bolt from the sheared off pole. AAAARGH!!!!!!

In the end i had to take it into work and hope that the engineers could remove it (gently).......

Remove it they did but not without some minor damage to the plastic on the underside of the evap head.......(im blubbing like a baby by now BTW) which has also resulted in the original screw and spring retainer in the head not being there........

Now after i picked myself up off the floor (well when the engineers got tired of waking over me) i started to think how i could overcome this little problem of holding the evap head down to the mounting plate (when i source a replacement) and i came up with a hold down plate that sits on top of the head and use extended bolts to secure it to the mounting plate (i know i know...when i source one). So i got the engineers to cut me a plate out and fabricate it so it sits snugly on top of the head.

If i stick some seal string underneath the plate and through the holes in the evap head where the bolts go through i should get a nice tight seal so no air gets in.

So there you all are, i'm gutted because i was really, really careful fitting this little baby as it was my 1st time from air.....

I DID NOT overtighten it when i first installed it - that i am sure of!!!

It just seemed to have snapped off looking at the mounting plate.

Can anyone find it in their hearts (after reading this epic sob story) to let me have a spare mounting plate they might have lying around so i can get my beloved pootah up and running again?

I'd have a word with Phil but he's not back until the 28th.

Hope you enjoyed reading/laughing at this post

I feel for ya mate. I know what it's like when everything seems fine and then the thing you really dont want to happen, goes and happens (X800 comes back into my mind :().

I may have a spare mounting plate lying around somewhere. I'll have a look for ya later on when I get a chance.

I like your way of mounting tho, I always get scared cos I think the same things gonna happen to me. I can see it coming soon aswell.

I was absolutely gutted mate, i can tell ya - especially when i was soo careful installing it, i just hope the bloody thing works with a crack in the underside of the head, i think it will as it just looks like it's full of insulating foam.

Cheers for the mounting plate if you have one.

My mail addy to let me know is here.

I'd really appreciate it if you did have a spare - i'll sort out the postage costs with you.

Any more offers for sympathy or mounting plates just in case :D????

Exactly the same happened to me 2 weeks ago when i got my prommie setup. I drilled throught the bolt and made a shape with the drill that a screwdriver could be wedged in, luckily it came out with out any trouble. I hadnt over tightened the bolt either. I had to order a new kit just for the mounting plate :(

Hope you get it all sorted in the end d00d ;)

On the note of the cracked plastic. Dont worry about that cos the one on my Mach1 comes completely off when you take the head off. Doesn't affect performace in any way as far as I can tell lol. Got my Barton 3000+ to 3.2Ghz so must have still worked lol. I'll keep my eyes open for the plate when I get home mate.

Cheers

"PHEW" thats a relief....

I was hoping someone would re-assure me :D

I really appreciate you taking the time out to sort out the mounting plate for me.

Thanks bud :D

Glad i'm not the only one then.....well not glad if you know what i mean.

I tried to drill it from the underside so i had enough grip but it didn't work.

Looks like a bit of a design flaw with the cpu kits tbh.
