M.2 PCIE & now NVM express

Hey all,

so read MSI's announcement earlier today and it got me thinking...

I have to admit i'm a bit confused as to what the future of storage in the next year or so is for the average high end enthusiast such as ourselves.

Right now I would say most people use Sata3 SSDs for high end enthusiast storage.

However over the last few months i've seen more reviews/mentions and so on of M.2. , PCIE And now NVM express. admittedly i'm finding it a lil confusing, are they all competing technologies or something else entirely?

PCIE ssds just don't seem to come in at reasonable prices at the moment and I don't see any slow down in manufacturers releasing new sata3 SSDs so what's the deal here guys?

apologies if what i'm saying screams noob and makes no sense but just wanted to see what people here thought

M.2 and PCIe are all just different connection standards. M.2 being the newest and faster than Sata 3 but still behind any PCIe ssd that uses x4 slots. NVMe is a new standard developed specifically for flash storage over the old and worn AHCI standard.

This whole article has very good info if you are still in need of explanations.

Thanks a bunch dude. Will give that a read.

Ok so NVMe is the one to keep an eye out on along with SATAe. Interesting stuff!

Yep! I almost want to sell all 4 of my ssds and just put the money towards any drive that's NVMe/PCIe and over 1TB. I'll wait till W10 to do all that though. I'd rather have a fresh windows install and the fact that none of these drives exist yet afaik.
