Hey guys, I am going to keep this one short and sweet.

I am a commercial pilot and a headset can be a pilot's friend or his worst enemy. When it comes to being in an aircraft, there 3 things that are crucial when it comes to a pair of headsets. Audio quality, microphone quality and comfort. I mention this because when it comes to PC gaming headsets, these should also be standards for which manufacturers design their products. The main difference between aviation headsets and gaming headsets is that one pair will cost over $1,000 and the other just over $100.

The G930s are Logitech's flagship headsets and for a company which holds such high regard in the gaming community, I believe they have made not only a poor product, but perhaps the worst headsets I have ever used. These things are simply very uncomfortable and microphone quality is subpar. The only good thing about them, in my opinion, is the sound quality which is outstanding, perhaps the best you can get at this price point.

Now, why are they uncomfortable? Its simple, the whole thing is supported by, what seems to be, a stainless steel band aided by a big piece of plastic at the top. The earcups and headguard (or whatever the top cushion is called) is made of very cheap materials such as fake leather and rather tough foam on the earcups. Thankfully these are over-the-ear headsets so the foam doesn't directly touch your ears, thats what they tell you anyway. Unfortunately the earcups are not a circular shape but rather a square shape meaning you'r ears will touch the sides. The design makes it appear as if they go over your ears, however you'r ear is actually circular and unless you have a very small pair

they will touch the earcups. I cannot wear these for hours on end and need to be taking them off to give my head a break.

The microphone quality is a disappointing. There is allot of static, the only remedy being lowering the microphone volume. However, that means lowering the volume at which people online can hear you, which in an FPS can be a nuisance. These headsets have a feature where if you raise the microphone, it will automatically mute itself. However, they have also added a mute button on the side of the left earpiece, why is this a problem? because it is right next to the volume wheel and very sensitive. With that aside, why would you need a mute button if it already has the feature of raising the mic? There is no point to this since if you have it raised you obviously do not wan't people to listen to you and if you have it lowered then you do. Also, most games have a push to talk feature making the mute button useless in my opinion.

Now the area where these headsets excel is in audio quality which is very good. The virtual 5.1 channel really does work and delivers a very different experience from the usual stereo sound. However, the 5.1 channel isn't really useful in games where there is allot of talking because speech levels, for some weird reason, come out in a very low volume. Thankfully there is a switch on the back of the left earpiece where you can switch from Stereo to 5.1 and vice-versa on the fly. Now, they also included macro keys, but they are stupid and useless and only there for a added promotional value. And that is the G930s downfall. Logitech decided to make these look good rather than making them feel good which should be of outmost importance. The mic quality could have been ignored if the headsets would have been more comfortable, but as I am typing this I am having to take them off from the pain.

Simply put, do not buy these.

I was seriously considering this headset thanks for the review !

I would'nt have expected them to be so bad

Me neither mate. But this is just my humble opinion. People with smaller heads might have better experiences or perhaps I got a bad one. I think that my point is to try it before you buy it in the store. Don't buy anything this expensive without first trying it. And if they don't let you, then simply get something else, its your money. If I could go back I would have probably gone for the plantronics gamecom 777. It just looks more comfortable and is cheaper with virtual 7.1.

My G35s were comfortable, but my criticisms were these:

The sound often refused to recognize the surround and you'd have to constantly tamper with the program to get it to work.

Both myself and a friend bought them and both snapped by us simply taking the things off. The plastic is incredibly shoddy.

Other than that, mic quality was alright.

Gamecome 777? That one is worse than the G35 actually. The gaming headsets I would recommend are the AKG GHS-1, the Corsair HS1 and the Sennheiser Pc 360 G4me. These are the headsets that got top marks in Hardware.info's latest magazine (Belgian/Dutch magazine.)

I wa going to buy this, before I realised it was a 'Virtual' surround sound headset. Would stay away from anything claiming 'Virtual Surround Sound'.

Arctic Sound 5.1 Headset (Only £38) FTWWWWWW. Such amazing quality for their price!! Excellent build quality, sound, mic. Only gripe is comfort. Starts to get a lil' uncomfortable after a few hours. It's bearable though.

Hi,

Your article, OK you pilot with £1000 ish headset, also you could be working for ROCCAT KAVE, BOSE or summin posting to stray buyers away from LOGITECH. I've tried ROCCAT KAVE, my LOGITECH G35(wired version) is better (similar retail price) and my opinion is the G35 is the flagship as the wireless model you refer too must suffer from wireless problems, batterys weight, battery life and stuff, wich cost more to the consumer for/and giving less user comfort.

LOGITECH released a new driver for G35 last October

I studied in Music studios at college about 8 years ago and the G35 is superior to the college hardware. Knowledge comes with experience and G35 is the best I've used and I'm happy with it and will maintain that satisfaction when I own the $1000ish Senheiser, BOSS, KOSS watever headset of the future

I own a pair of G35's and the 7.1 surround headset works great, i play FSX and I can here s the sounds around me and clearly define where the noise is coming from. 10/10 for me.

Good they are lovely. I use CREATIVE X-Fi supreme sound card with a good/oldish pair of SONY sub-woffer'd floor-standers and changing to the G35 Head-set is like jumping into the sea on a hot day if u like doin that
smile.gif

G35 has a built-in sound card wich appeals to budget users

There's a pic of BOSE headset. What are they and are they sold new for £80ish like G35. The article compares a gaming dedicated £80 headset to £1000+ Air traffic standard headsets

G35 looks nicer than the wireless version, G930. I read G930 gobbles battery power

Aren't the aviation headsets supposed to be uber reliable though and built specifically to hear voices and nothing else, hence the price tag. Then the £80 ish ones are better for listening to music? For example my £80 HD 280s have a greater frequency range than a pair of £1000 HD 800s, which are aviation headsets
