Logitech G5 Laser Gaming Mouse Review
By Hawkinsa21 a.k.a Al
Hey guys, finally got around to write a review of this new mouse of mine, and take some 'rather' sweet pics for you all, if I do say so myself

-------------------- WARNING - Not Dial up Friendly!! ----------------------
No messing around, here's a nice little piccy to wet your appetite...... :yumyum:
Firstly, I have to apologise for not taking pics of the packaging.... I have been using this mouse for nearly 2 weeks now, and I neglected to bring the packaging over from my parents house, where it was delivered to..... DOH!!
NB: the mouse mat is Kustoms own endorsed mat, with reflective glitter which really compliments any optical or laser mouse...
I must say though that the packaging, if you bought this mouse from a high street retailer, was very well packaged, and instantly grabs your attention, with words like 'Laser', 'Gaming' and 'High Res DPI', plastered over the front and back.... the packaging allowed a good glimpse at the mouse's top side, with its rustic looking design dazzling whomever happens to be oggling at it....

What you get in the package
Right, here is a picture of what you get in the package itself, minus the software and Logitech manual that you get, as this is generic stuff that comes with every pack that Logitech ship - of course the software happens to be for Logitech G5, you can't see it until you load it on your PC

This was a bit shaky, as I couldn't fit the tripod directly over the kit...

The package entails the mouse, the sexy G5 weights box, the weights themselves and the weights cartridge. Everything was very secure in the package and didn't fall out when I opened it...... it was all clicked into place, and taped in where necessary..... very useful if you are getting the mouse sent via the mail which most of us do these days.
NB: the silver 1.7g are so shiny, it was impossible to get the pic without nasty reflection from this angle!
The G5 unplugged
Firstly, the G5 is really really light in weight, and it fits perfectly into my hand... its designed for right handed users like the majority of mice, which is probably the only downside to this mouse.... being unbias that is.... I'm right handed so I personally have NO qualms about this.
Here's a couple of pics of the mouse from different angles....
This is a name that you grow to respect 'very' quickly.....

Again, slightly shaky, but this was very close up and the tripod didn't get low enough.... and didn't want to waste hours editing all the pics either :bootyshak
Nice side view!
This pic is slightly out of focus... this is because the macro facility is so good on my bro's digital camera, which happens to be a 5.1 mp Fujifilm camera, that after the autofocus is set, ANY slight movement will result in parts not being in focus....
This picture is quite toight as well..

All the pics were taken with my PC turned off to stop screen glare in the pics. There is normally an LED shining in the DPI bit, showing either a low, medium or high DPI, and the LED's light from the bottom of this little section, to the middle and then top part respectively.
Here is the thumb button...
NB: any white dots or odd lines on the mouse, are not mould lines or imperfections, they are dust and the odd bit of crap I couldn't clean off at the start - or missed

Overall, the mouse is a dream to hold and use, as you may or may not know, any PC you plug this baby into automatically allow the 'on-the-fly' DPI to work, as this is built into the hardware itself, so there's no need to install the software if your using the mouse on a mates machine for Counter Strike: Source, because his mouse is from the third world :rollingla
The glide pads you will see in the pic with the bottom of the mouse, really are so smooth, that if I coil up the mouse cord against the side of my keyboard desk, the mouse itself slips across the mouse mat to accomodate for the un-coiling mouse cord, rather than stay still or the cord jumping back to its normal state

One more point, I didn't find the lack of a second thumb button a problem, others use this for browsing, and have marked the mouse down in reviews for this as they can't navigate back to the page they've just either finished or got bored off....

The DPI buttons are also very easy to use, and although at first I found them slightly hard to get used to in CS and other FPS (Farcry etc), it soon becomes second nature to easily flick between precision mode and 'twitch' gaming as its referred to... nice feature, very simple, and the LED's on the DPI display show you what your current DPI is set too, either at the bottom of the display (low), middle or top (high DPI)... piece of piss
The G5 don't 'weight' around...
Excuse the pun! Not only is the G5 instantly responsive, it is also incredibly accurate and precise... this is obviously mainly due to the laser precision that it boasts, but is nicely helped along by the addition of the weights system
NB: the wireless G7 does not have this feature, and after about 10 days to 2 weeks of getting acustomed to my new delight, this now seems to me an invaluable feature, one that I can no longer do without!!
Check the pics of the diddy weights.... the black weigh 4.5g, and the silver weigh a mere 1.7g, and really do get that 'just right' feeling when customising your preferences of game play, and whether you like a light mouse, medium weighted mouse or downright solid feeling heavy mouse (my fav), all which give different precision and overal feelings during use...
NB: I did find that altering the weights after getting used to them, specifically when gaming, does make a difference to your gaming, in my case I get fragged a bit more, as you find yourself adjusting to the weight change whilst gaming...

There are 8 of each weight, meaning that you really can adjust the feel completely, you could choose to add no weights, just the empty cartridge, 1 weight, 2, 3, 4 etc, mix the weights up, the possibilities are not limited whatso ever, so the configuration can be totally customised, so you can add anything up to an extra 36g to your mouse.... sweet

The weights......
Another one for ya!
These really are tiny, and lovely as well, but keep away from small children who may look at these sexy weights as small consumable sweeties!!! and don't let your dog near them, they to will think that these are sweets.....

The weights have a groove around the circumferance which has a tiny black rubber band in it, which stops the weights from falling out of the weight cartrigde, pictured here...
This ISN'T a gimmick, it looks great but really is practical and as mentioned above, you soon think that you'll never do without them. The orange colour is lovely especially when the internal orange LED shines through it!!
And this is how they fit in, there is a simple catch underneath that holds the cartridge in place (NB: they fit in a specific way), acompanied by an 'eject' button that releases the cart..... :yumyum: super w0074g3/\3$$ on that!!
And here's the laser on the underside (obviously!!!)
For some reason, this warning was removed...... :eh: "Class 1 laser product - do not attempt laser eye surgery with this device, you'll fuck it up"
You can see some dust and grit on the bottom of the mouse, this is due to me not cleaning my mouse mat everyday, so dust obviously collects, along with whatever else lands on it from the cosmos that is my games room

Last piccy peeps!
This is simply taken because it shows the braided cord that the G5 has, its a bit pimp/bling/1337, but also is very practical, as EVERYONE knows how irratating it is when a crappy rubbery/plastic cord gets stuck on any angle!!! This simply doesn't happen with the G5, the cord glides over all surfaces with nil friction, and is a very tidy addition to an already excellent mouse.
Software
I haven't really played with the mouse software, although I can tell you that each DPI you choose to use, can be altered within the G5 software, so rather than have 2000dpi at the highest res, you can alter this to say 1800 etc... the lowest it'll go is 400dpi... and then if you want to you can use ingame settings to change the mouse sensitivity even more.
Each button is programable, and you can do other fancy stuff like setup macros so that button combi's can cut/copy/paste/delete etc, but I know that other mice do this too.
I had to set the thumb button to 'generic' in the software in order to get CS:S to recognise the button so I could map the lovely 'reload' function to it.... I can't live without this now!!! So if you have the mouse and didn't think this would map, there you go!! No need for newer driver updates that I've seen some people think they needed!
You can setup the mouse so that different buttons work differently in specific apps, but I've not tampered with this, I believe that this is the case with most Logitech mice, and as Im a gamer through and through, I don't see the need for this for myself.... others may find this very useful as it means you don't have to setup preferences each time you swap between e.g. Adobe premier and WMP....

Round up
OK, I've covered most stuff that I can think of, I tried to write this as an easy flowing, no-nonsence review, cutting out reams of crap. Some bits are bias you may find, but hey, a mouse this 1337 deserves it!!
It is the best mouse I've ever pwned

I used to be of mind that spending lots on a mouse was purely pointless... who needs on the fly DPI? who needs weights to help their gaming??? pffff! who needs 2000DPI??? - well all I can say is this; even if you don't believe you need them, you really, and I mean REALLY will love them all and not regret parting with £50 for this beauty, its my best buy this year, and Im looking forward to having this for some while yet, as nothing comes close to it, and don't suppose that anything will for a while.....
Hope you enjoyed reading this, its been a long time coming, but I'm pleased with it...

Thanks
Al
