LinusTech goes ham (not for people with sensitive wallets)

Faceplam this video is completely pointless

Sorry but i'm really starting to think that Linus is a complete idiot

I think it's a brilliant idea but the price is just to high.

I mean think about hosting a lan where people didn't need to bring there pc's because the hoster has something like this setup, meaning you don't risk damaging your pc whilst driving or flying to the lan event.

It would also mean less space is required really because of the lack of space required for towers.

There are a few downsides to it like ping issues if you were going to play online etc but if it was using a locally hosted server it would be great.

Also I think for the likes of CES which is where it's being used, it's better for the companies that want to allow people to try hardware etc to have something like this than, multiple different computers.

Then there are also game tournaments where they could run one of these which would stop any chance of people being accused of cheating, because they could quite easily lock out the ability to install programs, and make it much more of a even playing field.

Yes the whole idea seems silly and not something that everyone is going to do but there is some really good uses for something like this.

One thing is for certain, Linus does have ways of coming up with new video ideas. This type of thing is the only sort of videos he makes that I can watch. This was pretty interesting to watch, even if it has no real world application.

This just goes to show that we can go back to "the old good times" when the users sat in front of a screen and a keyboard and all tasks were handled by a mainframe computer, now GAMING edition

There were a few mistakes though. He claimed the rig pulled 1500 odd watts with Unigene going. What would happen if all 7 were running Crysis 3? I am sure it would pull much more than that, given Unigene doesn't really touch the CPU. Mind you that Xeon is probably extremely low powered any way so I may have a moot point.

I'd like to see Linpack and Furmark on all the machines for the power consumption test, but I guess Valley is considered to be a "gaming" benchmark the video was all about gaming... so.... ?

Well.... at least it sort of works?

Most his videos these days are "Look, we tried a thing and failed, but we still do multiple part video guides on them. Don't imitate what we do"

It doesn't touch the CPU though. Crysis 3 on certain levels will utterly hammer the GPU and CPU.

What didn't get thanked enough IMO was the one thing that made it all work - Windows. It just goes to show how well it supports cores and so on.

I dunno about that. Considering that Microsoft have such a massive chunk of the server OS market too you'd think they would have figured out CPUs sometime ago..

unRAID (the software used for the virtualisation) is a Unix based (as far as I can see). I'd be surprised if you could do this using Hyper-V.

Windows 8 and on are far better for core support and multi tasking. 7 only supported four cores natively which was years old from the Win2k days (when they supported like two CPUs with two cores). Wasn't until 8 that core support was massively improved.

Oddly enough due to me having an FX8 which were notoriously hated by 7 I jumped onto 8 pretty much at launch. I don't regret it either. Takes about two minutes to make it look and behave like 7 only the structure is much more modern :)

Yeah I regret not hoping over to 8 now (when I was on my AMD rig). Even with the core parking patches that they released I'm sure it was still held back by it. It always bothered me that AMD 8 core cpus on Linux were faster than they were on windows (as UNIX has always had excellent multicore support).

I've been running 8.1 on my current main rig since I first built it and I love it to pieces. In fact I'd say its been my fave windows experience thus far. All I use is 'startisback'.

Haven't watched the video, don't need to. Brings in a whole new era of pointlessness, unsubbed immediately.

I haven't learned anything from watching his stuff in so long, it just seems to be an excuse to try something stupid expensive and do stuff wrong intentionally now. I've always said they have done FAR TOO MUCH "do as we say, not as we do" stuff, which is not the right mentality when you are trying to be informative.

To be fair Linus has saved me some money by doing these really stupid things that you can't find answers to on the net because no one was stupid enough to try it.

I've had quite a few ideas only to find out he has tried it and it doesn't work..

Whilst I do appreciate the results of his experiments I really can't stand the guy myself. His voice is very high pitched and so some one like me that means bad. His honking and squawking drives me nuts.

He's got a beautiful cat though. Spotted bengal, big one too.

I must admit I kind of liked the cheap dual Xeon thing he did recently, that was cool.

Its not supposed to be informative. LTT has been more about entertainment for a while now. To be honest I hate his 'reviews' and I think this messing about with enterprise level stuff is pretty much the only thing of value his channel has.

It's a bit like Top Gear with computers, I think he even said once that that's what he'd like his channel to become. Doing powerslides in a supercar is also completely pointless, almost nobody can afford these cars and those who can never drive them like this. Also their challenges don't really tell anything.
But still a lot of you probably liked Top Gear, I certainly did.

Well, if you think about the reason why Linus Media Group make all of these videos, he's getting it absolutely spot on. And that is to make an absolute shedload of money through sponsorship kickbacks. Because let's face it, you're going to watch it even if you do think he's a muppet because there's no way on earth we are going to spunk $30k into a rig to just see what happens, but it's entertaining to watch someone else do it.
