Doesnt this guy make enough from advertising ?

I mean come on it doesn't cost that much to rent a rack or vm in a data centre... Maybe I'm missing something...

Your thoughts ?
Is OC3D next ?

ok, this looks wrong. Now i can understand a bit more why tom doesn't want to do a donation system.

Wut?
Apparently Linus doesn't make enough money? yeah right...
He has one of the biggest channels on youtube, he must earn a small fortune off it alone. More than enough to run a forum and it's costs anyway.

Wow... really, near half a million subscribers and all his advertising they need essentially a kickstarter campaign for their forums.

Honestly I don't have that big a problem with it. I don't mind throwing a little coin at a forum/community that I really enjoy. Yeah $500 is insane but something like the way DIY Mobile Audio does it with less ads, custom user titles and a couple other little perks for $30/year isn't that bad and I subscribed.

I can't say as to how much money anybody is making because I've never owned my own website and have no idea of the costs involved but I don't mind a small contribution to help keep the lights on in a joint I enjoy and get hours of entertainment, not to mention information out of.

I do understand why it could leave a bad taste to some. I'm sure there would be guys that think it's buying epeen or that you have some extra clout around the place because of it but in the few forums I frequent that offer paid memberships, I don't think that's been a problem.

in their defence, I know what kind of attacks they were/are coming under and how much traffic they get. They have had to pay for some very hefty firewall and cdn stuff and that stuff isn't cheap.

A lot of this feels like a bit of a piss-take as well.

can we has white badges tom :P because we all know white is better than pink of course.

its not a bad idea, for instance i used to have a sub for PCFormat, and would rather support this forum for instance than go back to a magazine, £5.99 a month for all the hilarity and actual info one gets from here is pretty good value for money. Plus I forsee most of the highly commercial youtube channels going p2v within a few years anyways.

I'm sure Linus' subs feel that way about him too, so good luck to them, I think that they will be inundated with donations.

I suspect the main problem this thing causes is the flamewars from the fact that they love linus more, because they have pink badges.

I don't mind the idea. But as even Linus said $500 he doesn't expect anybody to actually do it, more of just a joke.

As said above, I'd rather come here than read a magazine every month also, trouble is you buy the magazine then go on the forums anyway. I personally don't mind contributing, if it was OC3D, I get a lot out of here and Tom has to run a business. It can't be an easy thing to do but I guess everyone sees it differently.

I like the badge idea for teams, but not for donations. Those are basically just for bragging rights and would make certain people feel like they are better than other forum members.

As MacLeod and Chris said though, I'm assuming most people wouldn't mind donating a bit to keep their favorite forums running. I just think Linus took a bad approach. At least he gives something in return I guess, but making a video promoting it is just a bad idea imo.

Seems like he's short on cash or something when he does this. He also did an unboxing and overview of the Meze Classics 88 headphones after he had stated (a few months back) that these headphones were pretty pointless and you paid for the looks. He didn't say anything like that in the video though, mainly just the good stuff.

Same thing with the whole Razer Comms and Razer headphones in their WAN show. We all know Razer don't make the best headsets, let alone headphones but they probably get sponsored, so yeah.

Obviously businesses like this need sponsoring, but having sponsors and taking donations seems like a bit... too much?

I think fair enough if you actually have something physical to sell, but for just a logo it is more like begging for donations. In pretty much every other industry, people have to get bank loans, and other means of finance that they have to pay back, plus some hefty interest. That clearly is an option for Linus, but I do think it's being greedy in avoiding that option to ask for free investment.

A much better way morally would be for a certain amount of merchandise, but obviously it wouldn't be as fast to raise the capital. Still though, if Tom needed money here, I'm pretty sure even if an OC3D branded mug cost you a tenner, a lot of the members here would buy them to help out.

This is definitely a greedy option by Linus, and he's purposely skipping steps in trying to raise money in more ethical ways.

I agree with the Razer Comms, they even look ridiculous. They never work when they want them to either lol.

I like the mug idea, I actually subscribed to Custom PC years back just to get the free Custom PC Gold award mug with +1 to energy or refreshment or whatever it said. Still got it actually, the geek mug to sip your tea whilst shooting some soldiers in Battlefield!

I thinks it's more the fact that it is Linus.

The guy has two houses, a car and a motorbike. He is not short on money, not by a long shot. The ads on his forum must cover the costs alone, not to mention the money gets off Youtube, the money from NCIX and all the rest of his sponsors.

If it was a lesser known person who doesn't earn the money Linus does and actually needs the support then I would be more than happy to donate and help them out.
The Fact that this is just feeding Linus's pockets is pretty bad.

I was also very surprised. But as long as they don't force you to pay to use the forum or consume media, I'll be OK with that, I think...
