LGA 1155 Alternate Overclocking

Is there an alternate way of overclocking the Core i5 and Core i7 LGA 1155 CPUs?

Was looking around youtube and found 2 different reviews saying 2 different things. LinusTechTips stated that you can overclock ALL the cores to run at the set frequency where as TimeToLiveCustoms stated that you can ONLY overclock the TURBO MODE.

Can you get the best of both worlds or which is which?

I do builds for clients but I leave it all stock so they can do as they wish. So experiment isn't my thing, only experimenting i have done is with my PCs for rendering, minor OC on 980X CPUs with an NH-D14 on Asus Sabertooth, so it ain't much.

Overclocking all the cores to run at the same frequency is done by setting all the cores to turbo to the same value in the turbo mode. What I think LinusTechTips meant was you don't have to have the cores turboing to different values, which is what it does by default, but you have set them to turbo up to the same value. TTL said you can only overclock the turbo because due to the on-board graphics of the 1155s, it becomes unstable if you try to overclock the base-clock, so effectively, the only viable way to overclock the chips is to increase your multiplier.

I hope that wasn't too wordy, but they were just describing different aspects of the Sandybridge architecture.

yeah i made the mistake when i first overclocked of changing the base clock. plenty of bsods after a while. Just overclock the turbos to the same number i.e 40 etc. To be honest it's better coz it stops the cpu running faster than it needs to and just kicks in when it does.

its not just onboard graphics that get affected by the bclk (or fsb) everything on the SB platform is locked into the bclk pci-e lanes mem speed usb all share the same issues when the bclk is altered to much. Prior boards allowed for those to be controlled separately or be locked out from the adjustments to bclk. or adjusted as well with their own bios setting. So now are the days of multiplier overclocking only. you can adjust the bclk a tad on SB I've seen some get ok with like 105 but not many have gotten anything higher. I run mine at 102 to give me an even 100 upon bootup.
