LG W2363D

Howdy, folks.

I recently purchased LG's 23-inch 3D LCD monitor, the w2363D and I'd like to share what limited experience I have had with it, in case you're looking for a decent gaming monitor.

Please note, however, that I will not be talking about this monitor for the NVIDIA 3DVision. You might ask why I went and got myself a 3d monitor in the first place. Also note that this is not to be considered a review.

First of all, I'm an avid gamer. I like high framerates. I like being able to describe my gaming experiences as 'butter-smooth'. On top of that, this monitor has so much more to offer than my old Viewsonic FuHZion, an earlier 3D monitor. Not only does it function as a high-end desktop PC monitor, but it also allows you to plug in your consoles, SKY HD, Virgin Media HD, Bluray players etc with little-to-no fuss involved via the two HDMI ports. Until now my understanding of monitors has always been this: either it's a TV or it's a monitor. Whilst TVs are friendly to consoles due to their many input sockets and near-always integrated speakers, very often their picture quality falls flat due to it often stretching 1920x1080, often a 16:9 23-inch resolution, over a massive 32+ inches. They also often lack any DVI, making them twice as unfriendly to PC users.

Now I've got a crystal-clear monitor which is able to handle both simultaneously. While using a console, television service or bluray player, it's obvious that you aren't going to benefit from the 120hz technology; it's impossible. Consoles are severely limited by their hardware and aren't likely to be pushing 120fps any time soon, but on the PC side, things look a lot brighter. Quite literally, in-fact. Whilst handling bright images, faint colours were not lost. On top of that, dark areas in games were much more playable than on my previous monitors. The 120hz technology is just as fluid and smooth as my old Viewsonic, but I've no personal comment on the 3D vision. What I have picked up through various reviews is that the ghosting in 3D mode is no different to any other 3d monitor on the market.

The W2363D boasts many features that are beyond my comprehension, but what is important to me as a gamer is a smooth framerate and it certainly has that. On top of that, images in general were much clearer than I had previously been used to. Another favourite feature of mine is aspect ratio correction. An important thing to take on board is that ARC will not work whilst your monitor is set to run at 120hz. Lowering it to 60, or by selecting a custom refresh rate via the game's video options, will allow ARC to take effect, allowing you to play older games without having to worry about unstable widescreen modifications.

The long and short of it: Friend to friend, my honest opinion is that this monitor is fantastic. Ideal for the sort of gamer who wants great image quality on both PC and console. However, I take a major issue that the touch-sensitive buttons aren't lit.
