Lenovo G580 - Benefit from RAM upgrade?

I have a Lenovo G580. Whatever you think of it, my concern right now is the RAM available.

I'm considering replacing it with Corsair Vengeance RAM at 1600MHz or 1866MHz, but what I'm not sure of is how to determine what my motherboard will support properly. The 6GB RAM it has is the right amount for me to get by on, but if I can get a noticeable speed increase from tighter timings or higher MHz...

Anyone who can help figuring out this?

Mine has a i5 2450M.

Anyway, I finally got into BIOS (damn thing boots too fast lol and I was unfamiliar with laptop key for the menus). I discovered I can only view the system's information, I can't really alter it in any meaningful way.

I've no reason to believe the RAM would set itself to the advertised speed and timings, etc, so yeah, I'm gonna assume you're right about that. Thanks for the help though.

You have 4GB + 2GB at the minute right so that is only 4GB(2+2) in dual channel and 2GB(4-2) on flex. So just match up the other 4GB dimm and it will be fine. On all the laptops I have worked with Dell/apple/samsung/acer/sony .. you cant change the timings.

This is interesting...

EDIT: Quick question, will new RAM default to the stock timings of the RAM, or will it default to its specifications?

If you put 1333 in it will drop down to that. But anything over 1600 will remain at 1600.

The ram I posted in the link about matches that 4GB DIMM that is in the photo right there.

I'm, interested...
Are you saying the RAM will run at 1600mhz, even though the processor is listed at only supporting a max of 1333mhz?

I dont know a great deal about the specifics of RAM in laptops...
But I am also kind of in the same position. I have 6gb of RAM in my laptop with a 2630QM which is also listed as only supporting 1333mhz - so if I could put the Corsair vengeance in, I would be interested in doing so

What I meant was, andrew, would replacing both sticks if specified at CL9 default to CL11?
Reason being that the site I want to order from (I've got a few other things I'm ordering that are largely exclusive to them) don't have any CL11 RAM in stock, and the CL11 they sell in general is about the same as two sticks of CL9.

Timings might be a little different. I think I put tighter timings in my dads laptop but I'm not sure I can have a look.

James. The intel site seems to be dodgey on ram freq if you look at the i7 920 that says DDR3 800. I would see if there any users that have tried it.

Mine only reports 665mhz.
I may think about putting better RAM in after an SSD upgrade for it when I have the money.

Anyway - Drunkenvalley - I'm sure the Corsair will be fine for you then if it's running at 1600 already

Yeah, I'm mostly just curious what timings I will end up seeing if I put in Corsair memory. :P

Anyway, gonna think of how to proceed a bit more before deciding. Got most of today to do it anyway. I'll be back later after getting a replacement toilet seat. Woke up the other day to find it broken. -.-
