Im going to buy the Mrs a laptop as I spend a fair amount of time on my PC. Now I have about £500-£600 to spend and have no idea what's out there (I have never bought a laptop before). This is a Christmas present so do you think I should wait for something nearer the time or get stuff now before the Christmas price hikes?

She will be using it mainly for browsing the web as well as editing a few pics.

Cheer guys.

it is too early to buy PCs and laptops for xmas

you are better off waiting until mid december, when shops will lower the prices to draw more custom

or... wait for the january sales

Yup I agree. Mid Dec will probably be a good time if you don't want to have to wait for after X'mas or New Years. If your wife is only doing general stuff and some simple photo editing you could try looking into Lenovo laptops. They provide some decent prices for their many laptop series.

do you have any links of the stores you are considering buying for? because i'm in canada, so the prices are a little different.

I agreed that some lenovo's are good for the price, but if i were you i would look at the asus U series, they are nice (i just got one, the u36sd-a1)

but just look for now, and wait till december, because newer laptop and the "ultraportables' are coming out, this may change your mind, or if they are too expensive, at least the 'older' laptops from now will be cheaper.

I think it would be fun to try out the AMD APU based laptops. Wonder how well they will perform compared to Intel based laptops of similar range.

I think if u are looking for laptop in the price range of the thinkpad x120e, or the HP dm1 (thinks with amd e-350) it beats all the atom + ion solutions. But if u can afford an i3 or i5 does will be it, I think

Yup, if your wife will be using the laptop and it's going to be static/not mobile, then you could try looking at the larger laptops like a 15.6" with the i3/i5 specs. Even those using the Intel HD 3000 graphics will be sufficient for her needs. As a personal preference, I'd look for a keyboard that similar to full size so that I don't have to mess about using the function (FN) key too often and I also have easier access to the numeric keys. So if she is used to using a normal keyboard layout, I'd suggest going with a 15.6" laptop that most likely will also have a larger keyboard. Of course, you have to consider how much room she will have on her desktop.
