(Make it super shiny on top)

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Only if you treat the heatsink aswell or you could end up with higher temps tbh.

Whats your reasoning for this, overcklocking, benching?.

Overclocking. I can get a stable 4GHz but 4.2GHz requires lots of volts which result in higher temps. I am using a CM Hyper 212+ CPU cooler with dual fans.

i would tbh dude, it helped me get my q9550 to the fastest oc in the uk for the type

as said you need to do the heatsink too to get the best out of it

you are just wasting your time doing it to a mirror finish, once you get past 1200 grit its just for looks and not for cooling anymore.

Yeah, I may as well do it in the summer holidays coming up because I will have plenty of time. When you get the mirror finish, and it's just for aesthetics, it goes under the heatsink anyway...
