sorry about shoddy pics but wife has had the camera and now i cant do closeups? will be a setting somewhere

new as5 on and ive lost 5-7 deg idle already so its looking good

could be a good 10 deg once the paste has set

nice mirror finish there!

lapping = literally sanding down with finer and finer paper? How long did you have to sand for btw? might have to try it but am lazy :)

Looks interesting ... not familiar with this process. I presume you still whack a heatsink and fan on so not done for aesthetics but to aid the conductivity between cpu and heatsink? Sorry for the basic question.

Yup.. It removes all the tiny grooves in the sink so that no air can get in them between the thermal paste and the cpu.. Also works on heatsinks.

thanks for the quick response ... presumably there is a risk you could damage the cpu in the process though, how much of a gain is there likely to be there?

I think it`s one of those smallish % things that add together to make an impressive %.

Lapping, goo application, cooling..

I see ... are some CPUs particularly good or bad contenders for such action? I have a P4 3.2 at the mo and it runs pretty hot most of the time so was going to get a new heatsink and fan since I have always just had the stock one but due to re-arranging the upstairs of my house I can hear it at night and it is driving me nuts. Since I will be working on quieting it down I may as well try and get as much benefit as I can so might consider it. recommended or not?

Just changing from a stock heatsink and fan will make a massive difference to the CPU temp. Give that a try and see if it makes the desired difference before considering lapping your CPU i'd say.

I tried doing an old P4 that I bought on ebay for £10-00 inc postage. Didn't care it it worked or not.

I did not get the results you got unfortunately (as well as bending a number of pins - but who cares)

It took me about 40 minutes too. Next time I will just have to do more

Sean

wow - impressive temp drop - has the as5 cured yet ?

when you are lapping how easy is it to damage an LGA775 proc i guess without pins its not too sensative or am i over simplifying it.

what lubricant did u use - just water or a light oil?
