Just when I thought everything will be okay...

Hi Guys,

I am starting to lose my rag now.

I got a brand new Western Digital HD today from ST (Thanks!)

Whack it in.. wanting to install Windows...

Edit/Delete Message

But guess what... my DVD-Drive doesn't work. It only works when I unplug the Hard Drive. With the Hard Drive plugged in, it doesn't get detected! What's up!? It just hangs at the JMircon PCIE-to-SATAII/IDE RAID Controller or whatever!

Edit: This is odd. My DVD-RW Drive's LED flashes on boot, and the drawer can open, but then after a couple of seconds, it seems like it's dead. Doesn't flash or the drawer doesn't open!

Motherboard: Abit AB9 Quad GT

Please guys.. I need help. I need to Game!

TIA

I had the exact same problem on the GuadGT. I think I flashed the bios or something. There are also a few extra boot priority settings you should fiddle with. If that fails, ring their tech support, it is a known problem which they can sort over the phone in no time.

Well, I've been searching about and many people said disable the JMicron RAID. I have.. it no longer hangs... but now.. the DVD-Drive doesn't have no power after POST. Just before it gets the Veryfying Pool (Spelling) it works fine, but when it goes into the Pool it seems to be completely dead.

if it's an IDE optical & you disable the JMicron controller you've disabled the controller that the drive is on ...

Yep, what buff said tbh

You need to press F6 right at the start of setup and get the floppy out with the jmicron raid drivers on it

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick.

What it is... When I got the HDD plugged in (Both SATA Power and SATA Data Cable) and the DVD-Drive plugged in (IDE Cable [Only one on IDE Channel] and Molex) the DVD-Drive refuses to work. It has power right at beginning of power-up and then when it does the post beep it loses power; no LED and the drawer doesn't open.

The JMicron controller hangs searching for the drive. Still no power.

When the HDD is unplugged, the DVD-Drive works fine... gets detected and can boot into Windows XP Setup.

I am baffled, any help?

Check that the JMIcron controller is enabled and set to IDE, check that the jumpers on the DVD drive are set to cable select. Check that the onboard SATA controller that the SATA drive is plugged into is set as IDE too

Done what you said and it still doesn't work.

This is really weird :s.

DVD-Drive only works when the HDD power is Unplugged.

Flashed the BIOS to the newest one.

Seems like the easiest option is to buy a SATA DVD Drive. Bugger really.. more money. MEH!.

IDE optical drive ?

Be sure u can see it in the bios settings. (probably can)

If so, make sure it`s at the end of the IDE cable (master position) and if u have it on CS (cable select) at the moment, put it on Master.

If it`s in the bios or on the cable, as a slave, u may get issues.

(This is taken that u`ve said it`s the only IDE device)

Got a S-ATA DVD Drive now - Thank god.

But it's so slow booting from CD (Windows XP Pro)

Why is this? I disabled the JMicron Controller BTW.

Well - I am so jarred off.

I could smash the living crap out of this computer.

The New HDD which I recieved from ST is making a clicking sound. It slows down and then does this sound.

This is exactly the same as I had with the Seagate previously.

I think I may have to RMA this aswell.. What a f***er.

Another couple of weeks - Gameless.

If I`m honest here, I`d be looking at something which hasn`t been changed out and is connected to each of the things I`ve had a problem with.

A sata optical doesn`t have any excuse for being slow(er than an IDE), in a prolonged use it should be a small % more efficient if anything.

Hard drive, optical drive. Can u try them in another machine ? Doesn`t matter what u manage to do to them in another machine, just read off a CD/DVD and see how it performs - and the HD, (assuming it`s blank) - just a simple detect and format /q, detect and check.

If they work outside of the system, u`r looking at mobo or psu.

Well, I have now managed to install Windows and boot into it.

I am walking on eggshells now. The Hard Drive sometimes clicks, but not much *Knocks Wood*.

I am gonna boot into Ultimate Boot CD in a mo and run some tests. Hopefully it tells me it's the hard drive. If it's not the HDD, it's the Power Supply, not giving the hard drive sufficent power.

When your hard disk 'clicks' do you get any temporary system freeze or problems accessing that drive? Click to me says one of two things...

1) The had disk is duff and you can soon kiss goodbye to any data on it.

2) Or as you said, For some reason it's not getting enough power and is spinning down and then starting back up again

Yes, Before and after the 'clicks' I get a major slow down. About 5-10 seconds after the click it seems normal again.

From previous exp I'd say its power then mate. Normally if it was a mechanical or bad sector problem with the disk, you'd either get a BSOD from windows (if its trying to read OS data), or things you're trying to access would be corrupted.
