i have just ordered vista home premium retail, from overclockers.co.uk for 124 quid, i was just wondering, is there anything i need to know?

i have never used vista before, what apps work with it, what AV, firewall, or spyware software should i use?

does msn work with it? (or WLM, whatever they call it now)

or winamp?

and what will it run like on my pc?

Athlon 64 X2 3800+ DC AM2

4x512mb (2x kingston, 2x Adata) DDR2-533

Seagate 160Gb SATA-2 300

onboard graphics, sharing 256mb ram, (but PCI-E port if needed), Nvidia 6100

250W Psu (Delta it says on the side(i thought they only did fans? ))

some tacky Acer Mainboard

NEC 3550 DVDRW drive

Hitachi SATA-2 500Gb Storage

this is what i purchased:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SW-048-MS

so, thought, ideas, comments, warnings, anything? please

also, if somthing is substancially different from XP please tell me that too?

and what does the desktop look like upon initial install? i checked google, but it came up with several variations, and since i've never used vista, i have no idea which is right, if someone could post a screenshot it would be aprechiated :)

My 1st thought is 'Get a new PSU' tbh...

Vista isn't very different from XP, but its a large performance hit. I don't know if itll like onboard graphics atall.

Good too have a license for when it become a necessity though

currently running a modified version of XP, so i thought i had better change it, cos it is unstable and crappy anyway, it wont let me update it....well, i can update everything but internet explorer and windows media player, and tbh, WMP 8 is a little crap

tbh, the psu seems okay, for the system, i've never had a psu related problem that i know of

its an acer system, prebuilt, and its utterly silent, so i am kinda reluctant to change the psu, as it would make it noisy

isnt different from xp? ....could you explain?

someone else said to me "XP on sterroids" ....is that right? ....and if so, what the hell does it mean?!

It willl be fine with onboard Graphics. But it will turn off all the eye candy! ;)

its Nvidia 6100, so its not THAT bad i dont think

what eye candy?

and whats nod32?, i use Avast, AVG, Spybot search and destroy, Zonealarm, sygate personal firewall, lavasoft ad-aware, Ccleaner atm, will all these work?

altho, even with all those, i stil get viruses

Fair enough lol.

Theres a few niffty new features. But some of them are irritating and others arn't really necessary.

depends on the type of disc you brought. You really shouldnt haev all those installed, its gonna take a massive hit on your performance.

I know im going to get slated for this, but ive never liked it. Get rid of AVG and get a decent AV!!!

performance doesnt matter, aslong as it works, and it has no viruses

but i stil get viruses with all them

and the link is in the first post

thats what i thought, but it says

(Includes 32-bit DVD and info on obtaining 64-bit DVD)

meaning i get 64 bit free? or....

it doesnt really help much

nice and informative those bunch at overclockers are..........NOT!

not sure about if its free or not, you get windows defender as standard in vista, so that should help a little with your viral/spyware issue.

although, a reformat should sort that, right?, the sheer fact i am wiping the entire hard drive

also

will firefox work with it?

i dont want to be stuck with IE

and what about winamp? i'd rather not have to use WMP either

EDIT: so, so far, from what you've told me, everything is easy as .....easy...when it comes to installing it, i wont be faced with anything thats even remotely confusing, or new, to the point where it cant be figured out with a bit of logic, and its similar to XP to install? and when it loads up, nothing should be so new that i cant understand it (i have inteligence, just a lack of common sense, on that note, anything?)

errrrrr, no. Theres no was i can say something will be easy for you as i do not know your ability. Vista doesnt use IE for windows update, so you may be able to get rid of IE all together. If you are formating your drive, it will get rid of everything, including viral infections.

Vista doesnt take long to get used to. Things are just in different places. It's more of a case of exploring! It's a new adventure!

so i dont have to use IE, but does firefox work with it

ah, screw it, i mightaswell make these into numbered questions

1. does firefox work with it?

2. does winamp work with it?

3. will all my antivirus, antispyware, and firewalls work with it?

4. on installing, is anything more than just a bit different from XP, and if so, how?

5. can anyone post a Vista desktop, when just installed? ....just wanna know what to expect

6. is 64 bit worth getting, or is the lack of driver suport so great that i shouldnt even bother?

7. nod 32, i asked what it was, got ignored.....?

8. "XP on sterroids", correct/inncorect, and why?

Ill answer what i can:

1. does firefox work with it? yes

2. does winamp work with it? I spect so

3. will all my antivirus, antispyware, and firewalls work with it? most i spect

4. on installing, is anything more than just a bit different from XP, and if so, how? you get too use a mouse for vita:eek:. But its pretty similar

7. nod 32, i asked what it was, got ignored.....? The best anti virus program there is.
