Japan plans new supercomputer for 2010

Japans earth simulator computer was the most powerful supercomputer <35.856TFLOPS> --- until IBMs Blue Gene<70.72 TFLOPS> and NASAs columbia came<51.87 TFLOPS> along; now the japanese want their crown back

The new computer is wanted to perform a QUADRILLION Calculations per second <1,000,000,000,000,000>

and so would outperform any current supercomputer whose calculation power resides in the trillions <1,000,000,000,000>

NEC, Hitachi, the University of Tokyo and Kyushu University were chosen by the ministry earlier this month to develop critical technologies to make the ultra-fast computer possible.

Meh - this is cool news Joe but I always find these things sooooo unrelated to reality...I look at the numbers and go and then think WTF?
