I need a larger hard drive to replace my ageing 750gb barracuda. I have a 120gb agility 3 as my system drive. I plan to get an 250gb 840 evo to replace that fairly soon and relegate the agility as additional storage for games. I need a platter based disc for music and HD movies and possibly some game installs too. Thinking 2-3gb but leaning more towards a 3gb. Is it worth paying the premium for a WD Black or would I be better saving a chunk of cash and getting a Toshiba 3gb? Think the WD greens might be a bit slower than I'd like... Any suggestions welcome!

Frankly the blacks arent really worth it... have you had a look at the Seagate barracuda 3TB? Also why would the green series be too slow? I find that the green drives are decent, especially since you only need it for media storage.

WD Blacks are 6Gbps compared to the Green or Blues which are only 3Gbps and the Greens also use intellipower instead of a true spindle speed. I use Caviar Blacks myself over all other brands, as they have been for me the most reliable.

A 600mb/s interface vs a 300mb/s one makes utterly no difference with 120mb/s drives... even in raid :)

Seagate barracuda has been my go-to drive for years, despite everyone's misfortune I've never had one go wrong. The one in my rig is going strong for about 7 years now :D

I've started using WD SE enterprise drives as the 2 & 3TB versions are a bit cheaper than blacks yet from my experience with the 1TB version, it's faster than a black and has the same warranty length. Another bonus i found is that the drive is actually significantly quieter than my black too. They are designed primarily for raid use though, but i'm presently using just one. If it's anything like my old raptor 74, it ought to last over a decade. TBH, though, from what i can tell, the FZEX black and SE are virtually identical with only some enterprise features being absent on the black.

1TB Black (FAEX) vs 1TB SE using the same sata 6Gbit port

My Seagate HDDs have never died on me however i think I might be an outlier. Personally I'm also a big fan of Toshiba HDDs as well (they're basically Hitatchi drives) as they're cheap and solid.
