Is my computer possessed...??

Okay, this is the 7-th time my PC turns iself on and it's really freaking me out. It's completely random, it sometimes happenes during the daytime but mostly in the evening. For example, I come into my room, start taking my stuff out of my schoolbag and I hear a *peep, wroom* and I see the bootscreen on my monitor. I have no idea how it's even possible, I mean, there has to be physical power applyed to the power button inorder to turn the comp on but there is nothing in 30 cm radius near the power button that could lean onto it or something.

Any help....:( ? I swear to God I'm not making this up guys, I'm dead serius!

Sorry but that may me laugh.

Try going into the bios and check the boot options. It may be set too boot on a lan signal, a keyboard press or even on a timer (latter being highly unlikely...).

Are you switching any other eletronic device on in the room at the time? Such as a TV, radio etc? I had the same problem when I had a dodgy motherboard and it would turn on with my TV and stuff....

LMAO.

I get the opposite. Mine turns off when I turn the TV on! :(

to DavidT:

I turn the comp completely off, I never use that sleep thing.

jiffz:

Nope, there are no other electronical devices exept my PC, two lamps and a modem.

Ham:

How do I check all those things in bios? I've heard that just "surfing" in bios can screw it up, I need somekind of directions :)

That a load of Poo I swear!

Do a good "surf" Usually under power management... :p

Haha i've had loads of 'power gremlins' with my motherboards. Most irritating was the usb (5v) rail on my PC coming on whenever I turned anything plugged into the same extension cable off. My mouse and LCD screen would come to life on their own lol.

I'm sure if WakeOnUsb was on this would cause and automatic boot. Just pop into BIOS and have a good old root around for anything that says 'Wake On xxxxxxx'. If you mess something up just exit without saving and try again.

And don't worry about screwing anything up really, a good ol' CMOS clearing usually fixes any BIOS mishaps.

Was anyone else humming the X-Files theme tune when reading the first post or was it just me?? :rotfl: :rotfl:

Well, I'm back from my "expedition". Unfortunately I didn't find anything related to that 'Wake On xxxxxxx' or anything similar....So the poltergeist theory stays I guess...?:)

Ye boot on LAN sounds like it could be at fault

Either that or a poltergeist :p

Be very aware that u can turn it off in u`r mobo/bios settings - BUT it will still come on if it`s allowed in the network card options u can access via wondows.

I know cos one of mine did it the other day :) Wake on ping - freakin annoying.

How exactly can I access those network card options?

I can`t find the route in Vista atm. In xp u can goto network connections and select it`s properties....

But in both visa and xp u can get to it via device manager, select properties of the network adaptor, and goto advanced - basically disable anything that starts with Wake-up on...

According to the manual, the "Wake-up" type options are under IRQ/Event Activity Detect which is in Power Management:

Looks like default might be everything is disabled, so dunno how much this'll help

Oh, here we go! Wake-up on PING was enabled. Thank you Rastalovich and everyone else who took the time to help me, no more spooky sudden-bootups for me anymore. :) I kinda hoped my comp was possessed though.....
