Inwin 901 itx build

barnsley

born in a.....
Hello and welcome to my first build log :D. Come and watch me succeed/crash and burn! Admittedly this isn't nearly as spectacular as the 904 build going on in another thread but this should be a good example of a build in this case. I've named the rig spur, after the Spur Thighed tortoise.

Now, despite only building my rig a year and half ago it is time to replace it. It had a AMD 8320, 8gb of xm3 1333 ram, a seidon 120m cooler, a 120gb samsung 840 SSD, a 2tb 'cuda drive, a terrible enermax case, cx600w m psu and a XFX 7870. Since its conception it has recieved numerous mods (namely a new case, new fans and a Asus R9 280x and a RM750).

I decided that I needed a completely new machine as I had originally made my rig on a tight budget for streaming (twitch) and a gaming machine. However, I now use my rig in a way that really shows the issues AMD cpus have with certain tasks. This involves alot of cpu intensive tasks that do not make use of week, multiple cores. This time however, I've decided to not worry about a budget and instead build a rig I would be proud of or at the very least had a decent amount of grunt. No z97? No Devil's Canyon? I'm not going to be going for mad clocks (brah) as the airflow in this case is not really optimal. So a 4770k and a z87 'board will suit me well. Storage will also not be as important as I have another rig planned for that.

I've build quite a few machines, mostly for friends and almost all of them ATX. This is going to be a challenge as the only other itx build I've done was in a much more cable friendly case.

This will be a build that will take a couple of months to complete, albeit not as long as I anticipated as another project is already rearing its potentially leeky face. ;)

Partlist:

I7 4770k(purchased)
16gb of Corsair Dominator Platinum RAM
MSI z87I Gaming ITX motherboard- While at first this doesn't fit in with the more netural colors of the build, its always nice to have a bit of color
GTX 780 ref- The Ti would not make any sense to me currently as I only really plan to get a high refresh monitor. After two generations of mostly faultless AMD GPUs I felt that it was time to try out the green team again. I had apoor experience in the past but having worked quite a bit with the 6xx series for friends and the occasional client I feel confident that I won't be stuffed. Also, I can only use a blower type cooler that is dual slot. SO DEFINATLY NO AMD.
250gb Samsung EVO SSD- Fast, cheap and (imo) much more reliable then certain other vendors.(purchased)
1tb ssd- To be picked at a later date.
Inwin 901 ITX case- Arguably the most interesting bit about this build. I chose this case purely because I liked the look of it and I've always wanted a case that has actual glass. (Purchased)
Corsair pre braided cables white- Its a dark case and I feel it compliments the 780 and RAM perfectly.(purchased)
silverstone lighting- you've got to have light in that case in order to see things. innit.(Purchased)
Noctua 120mm case fan- You can't see it so it doesn't matter about color.
Corsair H75- 120mm rad AIO. Can't really go wrong. Corsair aren't my personal faves for coolers but eh.

This is the first shot of the case I got in a decent light. Immediatly I'm faced with an excellent mirror-esque surface that looves finger prints. Inwin have realised that and supply a huge cloth to clean it with. Good job lads:

Taking the sidepanel off involves unscrewing four side screws (the weird grey things are where the screws go in to)

This is my biggest complaint with this case thus far, a glass back panel. Cable management is going to be a very crucial part of this case:

Now, I must add, I've not, repeat, NOT even started with the cable management fully as it'll be a bit dumb to do so without having the full assortment of cables at my disposal (should have thought about that, gg idiot). I must say that the case has a nice gap for cable management and quite a bit of it will be no harder to do than a normal case. Neato. I partly have this to thank though. They've pre-routed the sata cables and as such I don't have to worry about any of the cables to do with the HDDS.

Thats my first update. Feel free to add any suggestions/ideas!

To do:
More cable management (and get the 24 pin white cable)
Braided fan-molex cable
buy the other stuff
work out which sata cable is for which drive (I'm not joking...)
Take better photos with a camera

UPDATE 0, The rebirth:

After much consideration, I've gone and got a Inno3D 780ti ref in preparation for a nice monitor, probably going to get something that is high refresh and higher res. So past me was an idiot, I do need a 780ti. Because of that I've also gone and got a Bitfenix 650w fury psu instead as well.
Here is what I have.

The 780ti is a beautiful card

It even came with a mouse mat! (good thing I love the iChill cards they do...)

And a copy of 3d mark

Just gonna get the mobo and ram next. Then this build finally gets the attention it deserves.
Until next time.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay :D

MSI and Gigabyte also do all black mITX boards if you want to go looks-over-features.

Gotta admit I'm falling more and more in love with this case as well, but for me the Phenom was a better (and far cheaper) option as well as being a bit more convenient in maintenance and modding friendliness :)

Cables need tiding up

Jokes aside this is going to look the mutts nutts dude.

I really hope so :D. If not then I've learned my lesson.
Hows that H80 treating you btw? I've heard its basically the same as the h75 and I want to know how people feel about that cooler before I go get one ^_^

The Phenom is a good choice :D. Its got looks and function! It also gives you a much wider choice of GPUs and, well, everything. The 901, while it does look fantastic (imo) it has really limited my choice of parts :I.
As you said its also got alot of modding potential I'll look forward to seeing what you do with it :P.

Ya know what I haven't even noticed it, it's that quiet. :) I'd definitely recommend Corsair AIO coolers.

barnsley, I hope it goes really well for you. I can't wait to see more as it develops. That case is really beautiful and has so much potential.

I've been waiting for build logs to pop up with this and the bigger brethren, thanks mate, look forward to the log, will now, if you don't mind, head over to the other one!

Will pop back in again. :)

HI

I am really looking forward to seeing how you handle the itx case. I had to learn to make short cables for my 250D. Its not hard and if you want some pointers, let me know. There does not seem a nice place to hide any extra. That case is interesting, and I am wondering about the airflow inside with the solid glass side panels, how does it flow?

Good choices on the components.

Thanks so much for sharing

Shame it doesn't have a window but I guess I can take care of that myself *hint hint*. Only downside to that are the GPU temps but I'm assuming that'll be fine with a massive 230mm fan in the front. Or otherwise I'll mount the window to the side panel on a few standoffs and wrap mesh around them between the window and panel.

Your case really does have the advantage there. That window (side panel) is just... Hnnnng.

Currently in the middle of exams, but after that I'll get rid of the current build and start this one. We might even finish at the same time! (Ohdear, that didn't sound as dirty before I typed it).

Will you be doing any modding or just a straight up build? Either way, I'll be following this one ;)

I've got a teaser for you as well. No build log thread yet cause I literally only have the case and little time atm :p

Thanks :) and there is a 120mm fan mount rather cleverly hidden to the right of the psu however airflow is pretty poor. The AIO cooler goes on the outside basically so the cpu itself isn't as effected.

The issue with cables is that its too long for short cables so cables would need alot of work to get proper sized cables. I'll probably cut them down to size at a later date, thanks for the offer anyway.

Cheers for the words guys :D. It's very good to see I'm not the only person who likes this case! ^_^

Looking sweet and I also love the case!

I am thinking of making a InWin 901 build for my wife, I would like to know if anyone here could tell me if the H90 would fit?

I do adore that case!

One thing, Is it that dark inside or is that the picture?
would look amazing with white LED's

Got white LEDs to go in bud and yeah its very dark, the glass is very tinted.

Anyway,

MINI UPDATE TIME- Pictureless edition. I've got the fans I want for it on order, an Akasa Viper for airflow in the case (you can't see the fan at all so it was a lovely case of just getting the nicest specs) and a good ol' SP120 quiet ed for the rad. I've also got a Bitfenix Molex to 3x 3pin fan cable on order (white) meaning even more cable management is needed. yaaay. I'll add some photos to OP when they come.

A couple of issues (well me being indecisive) have reared their ugly head. My first issue is that I've found an AIO that I think might go slightly better with my build however I'm not entirely sure if it is any good. The object in question is the Intel AIO thingy. My other issue is to do with the GPU, rather the lack of decently priced stock 780s. As I've mentioned previously the GPU has to exhaust as much of its heat outside the case as possible while not having any heat issues. It also must be a dual slot GPU that isn't bigger than 30cm exactly. Obviously I'm not fussed as to which team it is although I would prefer to avoid EVGA as I've got a bit of bad juju with them :P.

The lack of major updates is down to issues with a couple of parts as well as my car deciding that exhausts are for P***ys, sorrah guys :(.

The Intel AIO will be fine considerin it's just another Asetek rebrand. Not the best for the money though, if anything it's too expensive for what it does. What made you think it goes better with the build?

(I should really add a vodka bottle for size comparison to my build log) :p

It lighted up? I unno tbh.
I'll stick with the H75 then, urgh I really want to do the build, its killing me not being able to get absolutely eveything and get it done :(.
haha go for it :P.
