Interesting DX10 Info in Issue47 Custom PC

The news some have been dreading and I have been on my soap box about for ages:

CPC issue 047 August 2007 test drives DX10 patches on the latest DX10 'ready' GPU's.

Even the X2900 and 8800GTX could not run above 1024x768 and at this resolution no AA or AF was possible to get playable minimum framerates.

All those buying the latest hardware today for DX10 games of tomorrow - believe me when I say I take no pleasure is saying 'I told you so' - those that just wanted the fastest today for DX9 (like me) got exactly what they wanted.

Needless to say some of this is driver related (not having DX10 games ot test DX10 on is a big disadvantage for hardware developers) and some of it is down to how difficult DX10 is to implement - hence why DX10.1 is pencilled for release this year.

Lets hope that the current hardware performance is improved in driver releases and further patches for these games.

Also - the screenies that CPC shows of DX10 patched games is good, in my opinion however, for the performance hit involved, it don't make me wanna jump for joy and insist on DX10 for now - especially as I aint got me a 8800GTX/Ultra or SLI GTS system with SLI enabled games.

:D thats why i bought an 8800gts for windows xp dx9 use - by the time there are any dx10 games that actually make me want to swap to vista then il buy another card..... the hd29 and 88 series cards are for high res dx9 gaming really.

IMO anyone that bought a current dx10 game thinking they'd play every dx10 game at good frames/high res was a fool.....it never works that way - dx9 all over again anyone? took ages for cards to catch up...

Nice post as always Mav :)

Pretty standard fair, the first gen of any graphics card series is best for play the old stuff really well, to play the new stuff really well, the second gen is always where it's at.

At least anyone with a 8800GTS/X has got a good life out of the card already (in top of the line GPU terms), so i dont think their owners can complain too much.

I'm pretty sure it's firmly a driver and software issue. I mainly think this becuase of the large (percentage) performance increases you see from going from the current nVidia drivers to the beta ones. After all, all of the programmers are having to start learning to program DX10 from scratch. Anyway, I'm just happy to run DX9 games perfectly at massive resolutions with a DX10 GPU.

Oh sorry I forgot to mention the extent of the CPC benchmarks - they extend to all available driver releases including the latest beta drivers that show a substantial gain in synthetic benchmarks that still remains absent in games - it's a really good read I urge anyone out there to read it so they really understand where we stand with DX10 games with todays products.

The message is clear - for DX10 performance wait for next gen DX10 GPU's for ulitmate DX9 performance then the x2900 and 8800GTX are the weapons of choice....... for now.

I still think that it is driver issues. Also, it could be the way that the game-programmers programmed the game. Would anyone like me to scan it in?

I think if you read this post properly I already stated some valuable comments on DX10, programming and drivers.

I hope you are right, but if I were you, I would not bank on that being a reality - I would think that there are some improvements to be made, but nothing like what you would expect from a £400 GPU for DX10.

I think there will be improvements to the stage where the games are playable (hoping that the new DX and new OS in the form of Vista is resulting in some less than tight coding as there is probably quite a bit to learn), but im not really in a position to add any more authority.

Luckily there arent any games i really want to play which have to have DX10 yet, so i can hold off on the cards (and Vista)
