Intel's unlocked 28-core Xeon W-3175X processor will not be soldered

Understandable, no-one overclocks in the server market.

I wonder why they even unlocked it. Maybe they just want someone to delid and LN2 cool two of them to break some records so they can be king of the hill on hwbot?

Unlocked gives it an appealing selling point.

"I just spent all this cash, so I want to get the most out of it"

It's a Xeon. Typically those customers do their research thoroughly.

They have i9 eXXXXXtreme for that segment. :P

Because it doesn't cost them anything and they get to use it as a selling point.

Nah. I think the reason they have unlocked it is because they knew it would be slower than AMD's 32/64 TR and thus needs overclocking to make it faster.

I really do think it is that simple. However, they have limited the clocks somewhat by putting paste on it (I think that was also deliberate as they NEVER paste Xeons).

I think the reason they started pasting was to reduce clocks to reduce the amount of returns/RMA tbh. I really think it was all as simple as that.

Its aimed at the enthusiast gamer/streamer to compete with threadripper I think and LOL if thats the case, unless it is priced to compete

Nah it's not. It's a Xeon, so it's aimed at the pro market. However, if AMD sell a 32/64 CPU that can overclock and beat it? it would be a laughing stock.

Don't get me wrong they will get a few HEDT sales but not many. It's more a case of who can pee the highest I reckon.
