Intel Releases New Version of the Xeon

Intel has just today released a new low wattage version of the high performing monsters that we lovingly call 'Xeon'. This is a step in the right direction and one can only hope the trend continues in future products. Find more details in the news.

Wow, those prices are surprisingly reasonable, and Intel are making these incredibly power efficient, 12.5 watts per core:eek: .

One can only hope. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the addition of as many cores as they can fit. I'de rather see advances in a singular processor than 8. Dual-core is about as far as it should go. Then again, if both processor number and single processor performance increase I can't complain, as long as the proccy itself doesn't get bigger.

I'm beginning to doubt that more and more, if the current trend of intel progress continues I can see AMD having to say goodbye to the high end CPU market completely and focusing on their GPU/CPU combo systems

Things were looking pretty good for AMD 2 yrs ago when Intel's best was the power-hungry Prescotts. Intel currently has the momentum, but I wouldn't write AMD off just yet. From what I've read Barcelona should be a good match for Conroe/Kentsfield. What happens after that only time will tell...

I personally think that AMD have a good chance of releasing a chip to compete with the current Intel lineup. However, as this news shows, Intel are somewhat of a moving target at the moment. I think by the time the Barcelona comes out, AMD could well be aiming in the wrong direction.

I guess AMD is in some real financial trouble right now trying to get something together to compete with Intel... If they don't hit a winner there's a chance of no more AMD.

Nice one Intel! :)

But I still would of thought we would of hit the 4ghzs mark by now!
Why do we need 4Ghz? Early nineties Intel made promises of 10Ghz processors, and thanks to Netburst we were well on the way. Now we have the Core 2 architecture, it'll simply be more cores and less speed.

the stupid thing is that amd is still on 90 nm while intel are 65nm and already planinng 45 nm , this shows how far behind amd are
