Hell, X79 is still a valid platform that has already lasted ME years, and will last even longer, since I refuse to go X99. Your X99 rig will last a loooong time. Or until you get the upgrade itch.

Nah, not yet. I can get a 3960x for less than $300, but right now I'm happy with an OCed 3820K. It runs at 4.3ghz, under 1.3v, and hasn't seen 60C yet. So I'm not sure if it's worth an upgrade. I'm moving next year too, and I have my house sold, so I might lose my mind and build an X99 rig with dual 1080s, even though I have no need of such things. My x79 rig with dual 980's performs pretty well in 4K with the games I play (Fallout 4, Civ5).

I'm not so familar with X79 and X58 platforms really, mostly just from 2500K and newer (and of course now you're gonna tell me that both are from that timeperiod)
