Company announces closure of chip production plant in capital, employees will relocate to company's other plants in Israel
Intel announced Sunday that its chip production plant in Jerusalem would be closed by the end of the year.
Intel Israel CEO Alex Kornhauser said that the company's 300 workers in the capital would not be fired but would relocate to any of the other plants across the country according to their choice.
In a press conference summarizing the end of 2006, Kornhauser said that it was an excellent year for Intel Israel in terms of production, development and exports.
The company's exports totaled USD 1.3 billion, he said.
A rise of 9 percent was noted in Intel's exports in 2006, and between 1999 and 2006 this growth amounted to USD 11 billion.

Meanwhile, the construction of Intel's largest plant ever has begun in the southern Israeli city of Kiryat Gat.
This would be the second plant built in the city in 15 years, and a third plant may also be built in the future.

The company is expected to hire 2,000 new workers for its new plan, as well as 1,500 contractual workers. Intel Israel currently employs 6,820 workers.

Roni Fridman, Intel's processors development group leader in Haifa spoke at a press conference.
Fridman spoke of transferring the focus of development teams from mobiles to all parts of the market - servers, mobiles and desktops, and told that all development phases, from definition, and planing to debugging were made in Israel.
Fridman chose to emphasize the record time which the developing team succeeded transferring the products from development to production, which allowed to accelerate the launch of the products and the substantial contribution of the products development in Israel for Intel.
Among the 2007 products are the Santa Rosa platform - The next mobile platform which presents advance wireless networking and better graphic solution, 45nm processors, "Core" based Micro processors for the MP servers market, a variety of UMPC products and WiMAX technology (will be integrated in Santa Rosa.
Fridman presented this week, in worldwide public premiere, two next generation 45nm processors (Penryn)and told that they are currently going through the final tests in Intel's development center.
actually those processors were planned in the USA (with the help of Israeli engineers) and they will be launched in H2 2007.

In 2008 we will see another significant rise in the exports, as we will launch production in the FAB 28 plant

In Jerusalem we made a mistake by not preparing an area for additional plants, and such a mistake must not be repeated. In Kiryat Gat there are lands for further development
