In the market for a lappy

Well guys, I've been offered a laptop by my mum for my birthday (i have to pay some towards it) primarily for college work, but as you know, wheres the fun in that?

I want to keep it as cheap as poss (so far £300 has got the go ahead) but not quite sure in the lappy department what to expect etc.

Would like a nice screen for dvds and stuff (plane journies, in bed, in car)

Capable of playing some games, nothing too WOAH but still capable. Such as RTS like red alert 2 (most will play this) but also something a bit more up to date such as football manager (not sure how this would run)...just something to keep me occupied ya know :p

Also all the other crap i'd use it for (msn, browsing and music) but im guessing this is only restricted by wifi (also needed) and hdd space - wont need much.

I know raging is selling one but not sure if its tooooooooo much of a deal (<3) after some people showed me some deals on misco for example...

Any recommendations on which model will best suit me?

Never had a laptop b4 and it sounds sooooo cool having a portable pc!! :yumyum:

If u want, You could steal my dads....

I can blame some chavs, and u slipt £200 into my pocket.

That way everyone is happy :)

mine? :p

for around £300-350 you should get something around centrino,512-1gb ram, wifi

128-256mb onboard graphics and 15,15.4" screen

for a bit more you could get a c2d lappy but it will be craptastic cause the onboard graphics will let it down imo

without spending at least £500-600+ you pretty much aint gonna get a laptop that can play game very well.

an average/good centrino lappy with wifi and 512mb ram or more and 128mb onboard graphics is a good start if your not looking to spend much and not game much.

hope this is helpfull:)

at least it would fold nicely though :P

ebay a sony viao z505 or a compaq armada m300 look @ the 512 1.3P3m models ... these are incredibly slim and light laptops with good battery life and medium performance (they will run RA2 ><>< it requires a 266 P2 and 64 MB ram IIRC) veru good for workin on the go ... woolworths also have a fujitsu amilio for around 250 Celeron M 1.6 512 DVD writer and reasonably portable

@ kemps that is a major bargain man .. wat line is it ? 6400 ?

Well basically i know anything will run RA2 but wouldnt it be nice to run say command and conquer 3 or something with a bit more ummph. As raging said, theres a point where you have to pay almost double the price for not really worthy performance gain. I want to keep below this point yet get the most for ma cash :)

Ill deffo be checking that dell out!!!

Anybody see any coupon codes floating around for the "InspironTM 1501 (N05157)" ? Seems a v. sxc deal to me ;)

I thought I might`ve been in the market for a new lappy last night >.<

A bit of checking and bobbing in work today and I find one of the memstrips is effed.

.. phew-dizzle.

EDIT: I blame Vista btw, no good reason, just makes me feel better.

The dell comes with 2gb ram!!! :yumyum: and a decent graphics chip aaaaaaaand a pretty nice cpu - i think that would last me the longest tbh - just need a coupon saver for it

I just picked up a Dell D620 at work that was deemed 'BER' Beyond ecconmic repair. The supplier wanted £390 for a replacement screen!! I asked if I could have it, to my surprise the answer was yes. £130 later I have a D620 & port replicator with 2.25 years warranty remaining.

Having mentioned that.

I don`t know what other members think, but I absolutely love the idea of a docking station.

Alot of Dells do them, I can`t say if they all do, might be worth checking out - u could then buy one in the future if u`r that way inclined :)
