and a asus ncch-dl motherboard.

going nto put a x800 xt pe pelt cooled in there.

and get 4x 512 ddr 400 memory.

going to water cool both the xeons and hoping to hit 3.8 ghz each.

going to do the beat ther office custom pc comp again.

and hope i get in front again.

does any1 know if haveing dual cpuz give better 3d mark scores. thx in advance.

welcome back Daz! :D We knew you wouldn't be away for long. I'm expecting Bradford-wide power cuts once you get going!

I guess you have seen the shootouts in tomshardware and anandtech between the two?

Having dualm cpu's I don't think improved 3dmark scored much you'll get crazy sandra scores though.

I see you figured out how to use Quotes even if you can't decide which CPU to go for!

lol

Go Daz. If i were you though, i'd research it cos as nick says, they wont give you a good 3D score. An FX-55 would beat them hands down :)

Hi Dazboots,

Good to see you back again.

For Beat the office you need the XEONS, the overclock is much higher than Opteron and trounce all in it's wake for encoding.

However the new low wattage HE Opterons should overclock well and keep nice and cool. The limit is the ECC RAM, you need the best and the relevant dividers to boot.

SMP does not show any big improvements in 3dm, custompc did an article on it last month, 3d games that improve with SMP are Quake III and Doom3. Otehrs show no change (Far Cry, HL2)

You should be able to own the customPC benchies with your set-up Opteron or Video. go for the IWill MOBO based on Nforce3 250

Remember, the Nforce 4 Professional for Opterons should be available shortly and overclock like a champ. I think there is an Sli version coming through the ranks.

Biggest thing for all this is of course, Dual Core is just around the corner, given the cost of this investment, is it worth doing now? Or better to wait for a dual, dual core system with Sli (FFS that'll be a beast).

Good luck.

DAZBOOTS - One last thing, can you tell me all of the timings youa re using on yoru GSkill ram and the volts anbd on what MOBO. I have a DFI Lanparty A64 board which has loads of RAM settings, apart from the usual 1t 2.5-3-3-6 things I really don't have a clue what I should be tweaking!! Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Cheers

Daz, I have a similar setup with a pair of 3.4 E0 stepping Xeons I picked up on ebay for £550 for both. They maxed out at 3.7 and gave me a CustomPC score of 2.18 which left me second a couple of weeks back. The pelt wont make a difference to any of the custompc benches I think. I used 2 x 512 MB and by default on the NCCH-DL PAT is enabled, but throw in 4 x 512MB and PAT is disabled; the video encoding score improves a little with 2GB. Dual Xeons with OCZ 3700EB running 2.5-2-2-5 at 217FSB only gave me Sandra mem bandwith of 4,400 so not great there, and 3DMark01/03 no benefit at all, did not test 3DMark05 though.

I think most apps are not multi-threaded so do not benefit much from dual CPUs although that will improve with dual core chips appearing. I am running a TDX on both Xeons and a DD block on the graphics but temperature wont be an issue since the max OC on that board is 233 and you might get nowhere near there. There appears to be no reliable temp and voltage monitoring tools I have found so far, MM5 does not support this board and all other software I tried seemed to read 48 degrees regardless of CPU load. The leader on customPC now has managed 3.97GHz on his 3.6 Xeons with a score of 2.21 so you may be lucky and get a good overclock too. Volt mods are rare and there is a pin mod to improve volts slightly but you'll have to look at the forums to learn about this.

For interest my dual Xeon setup scores over 25,000 on the sandra CPU test so this setup has plenty of poke. My 4.6 Prescott cooled by a GT just about crawled over 13,500 to give you an idea. Good luck with it mate ...

New Nacona Xeons

Daz, if you do go the Xeon route there are some new Nacona 3.6 2MB L2 cache chips around now that should be better than most of the peeps competing in the CustomPC benchies and some 3.8Ghx Xeons due out soon ...
