Agreed. I've got a 28" 4K monitor which I got dirt cheap, but it really is too small for such a high resolution without display scaling. Fine for games, but certainly not optimal for proper work.
It's not Windows you have to worry too much about. 8.1 and on scale very well. It's things like Photoshop and other thousand pound apps that don't scale at all. And thus you can't use them, as I found out with my 28" 4k display.
Got to admit it would be killer for gaming though, though 4k is about the limit on a Titan XP I reckon.
Yeah, it's the multitude of apps that I'd be more concerned about than Windows. Window scaling isn't great like NBD said, but smaller programs are much worse.
Windows scaling for me was awesome. Absolutely no issues with it at all and you could configure it just as you liked it. It was app scaling that was the issue. Pretty much nothing scaled.
1440p is the sweet spot any way. And I don't think that will change for a while yet. With DSR and VSR there is literally no reason at all to have a 4k screen. Just none. Most (good) games will scale to 4k just fine and you will get all of that lovely detail.
I forgot just what a difference that makes to Fallout 4. You go from 1080p "WTF were they thinking?" to 4k "Wow, this game actually looks nice and at times quite beautiful !"
So issues scaling at 4K for me either, just this stupid 28" screen size. Damn me and my penchant for snap purchasing decisions when things are on sale! If I had a do-over, I'd be getting a 35" screen, at less than 4K res.

Yeah I jumped in far too early. Two Titan Black was all you could give it then.
Now though? I love it. I've been playing Fallout 4 so much lately. Like, loads. And with the better textures and graphical improvements it actually looks rather bloody good at 4k. So much so I often stop and think "Man, that is beautiful!" like I used to in Fallout 3. Oh and of course the weapons and all of the other stuff they've done using Gamedoesn'twork.
Viva Titan XP/1080Ti etc I guess?
Talking of which... When I got my 4k screen my buddy in the USA bought an Asus one. Nothing special, no syncs, 60hz. He's had it ever since, and I've had to listen to him have all sorts of issues trying to run it at a lower res etc when gaming. He's finally bought a Titan Xp, so I am looking forward to him going "ooo" and "aaahhh" with me instead of complaining his screen is quarter of the full size
But yeah he only had a Fury at first. Then he got a 1070 but neither are any match. Finally he can actually use his monitor properly.
