Right, I’m in a dilemma, My girlfriend needs a new PC Badly, I’m talking 800Mhz Pentium 3, Nvidia Geforce2 MX and like 256 SDDR Ram. lol! So she asked me to build her one for around £400 so we are going to buy it bit by bit over the next couple of months. I started with the screen. A £133 LG 20” Widescreen that kinda pushed the budget out the window so I just tried to keep cost to a minimum but still getting her something nice n quick maybe for alittle gaming like half-life 2 (She like that for some reason) anyway me being me every time someone asks me to build them a new PC I’m like u can have this bit out of mine this bit and this bit, AND ILL BUY BETTER BITS :D ok it’s a habit I can’t help it :P SO the new 780i Mobo’s are just about to come out so I was thinking sell her my Mobo for about £100 still very new, Sell her my PSU for bout £60, BUT THEN I was sell her my E6600 for about another £100 n then get a Q6600 but I thought might as well wait for the new Penryn Quad Cores to come out but i don’t know when they will be out (Mid range ones like around £200) n THEN I thought I’m losing my mind n then I thought hmmmm am I over pricing the stuff and scamming my own GF. So I don’t know whether to wait for the Penryns or just get her some lower spec stuff for abit more money E.G. an E6550 and probably a 650i but if I did that when all the new stuff comes out I will not be able to get it for a long time until I save up and then I will still have allot of my old V.GOOD stuff that needs a home and could of gone towards my new stuff!?!?! Ahhhhhh Blah I’m confused. Sorry about the long post I just need some advice and opinions on what U would do. Thanks for any help Guys

(P.S MY SPECS ARE BELOW vvvvvvv)

Possibly slightly overpricing and stitching up your gf a touch. E6600 not worth £100 now sadly or i'd sell mine.

To be honest for what you've said she wants it for a 650i or something similar would be fine so selling her a £100 mobo might be a bit unnecessary. But also your E6600 would also be ideal and last her for perhaps as long her Pent 3 has :D.

Mix and match a little but also don't do yourself in.

Yh thought i might of been off abit on the pricing, What do you think E6600s Are worth then I cant find them anywhere below £130. And why the hell have Scan and Ebuyer stoped selling E6600s?

This is your gf so you need to do her good prices...

I sold my e6600 at the end of summer for £100, that was to a stranger.

Someone on here just sold a 680i for £80, again to a stranger.

You don't say what psu you have?

Anyway, what I'm getting at is those aren't good prices for friend/family/loved one category.

The e6600 has been replaced by the e6750 iirc. I'd say do her the proccy and mobo for ~£120.

You'd do better to sell privately to get the most for your own kit to upgrade and just keep an eye out for deals for the misses, or just bite the bullet and give her your kit for really cheap

i sold my e6600 and 2gb corsair ram (800mhz 4-4-4-12) for £100... they all sell the 1333mhz e5550 i think, which replaces the e6600 and costs about £100 iirc...

Yh i see, im not evil lol i would never try n scam anyone :P especily some one that close, I just didnt have any secondhand price to compare it to. I think ill go ahead and do that, my power supply is a Enermax 600W noisetaker 2, probs will give her that for bout 40-45.

On another note do you know when the midrange Penryn Quad Cores come out iv heard around Late Feb/March.

Penryn are delayed due to lack of competition - as a company there is no point competing against your own products ;)

Re. the prices - I wasn't saying you were a scammer lol :p

No prob i know u wasnt saying i was :P I just didnt want to make my self look mean lol anyway i think i will defonatly sell her my motherboard and get a 780i, If the Penryns wont be out for a while i might aswell hold onto this one and buy her a E6750 or something and then buy my self a Penryn when they finaly decide to release them. Oh and the RAM, this should be fine shoudnt it? This is what iv got in mine at the moment, Cheap as chips, Would it be better to get some faster RAM though since this stuff is so cheap? And whats meant by memory timings? Mines CAS 5-5-5-12 and u can get CAS 4-4-4-12 witch are more expensive, are the CAS 4-4-4-12 ones faster? Thanks

i think you're charging your gf a bit much for this stuff, esp as she is your gf!!

Try reading all the posts before you make me look evil, I Clearly indicated I was just roughly guessing the prices as I’ve never sold computer hardware second had or brought any, There for I really don’t know how much it is worth..........

Bump

Erm, what she do with the pc ?

She will do general stuff and the odd game nothing too stressing, Theres just 2 peices of ram that are identicle but one is CAS 5-5-5-12 and the other CAS 4-4-4-12 which is better? the CAS 4-4-4-12 one is tad more expensive so i gather it is better, It also says it is SLI Ready and has EPP, Yet the CAS 5-5-5-12 doesnt and is cheaper.

Yeah, its got faster timings, but for the odd HL2 session i doubt it will make much difference.

As you spent a bit on the Screen, id try and cut the price on the ram.

Thanks :) wont the EPP improve performace aswell? Its only a tinny bit more expensive, i might aswell get it.

EPP = enhanced performance profile.

Basicly this acts to set your ram at its optimised setting without you having to manually set timings etc in the bios. Your motherboard must support EPP otherwise it will just act like any other ram and the settings will be dictated via its SPD settings.

I'd still go for the 4-4-4 timed ram though as it will most likely overclock better in that you can relax the timings to 5-5-5 to get higher bandwidth.

Hope this helps.

You should buy a motherboard,CPU,Ram bundle which can be found in most online retailer. I think that CCL is a good place to start and then buy the other components from other places or the same shop. The bundles are more cheaper than if you were to buy them seperately.

Now I`m interested in this EPP thing.

Cos I got some dominator stuff here that has an EPP profile that shows 533mhz. However, if I go anywhere much above 420 it starts having a fit.

Where do u find if ur mobo is EPP friendly or whatever ?

Cpuz says it`s something like 4-4-4 up to about 400, to which the profiles go 5-5-5 and finally an EPP listing of 5-5-5-15 533mhz.

I have no idea tbh.

To be fair, ur stuff is probably too much for what she`d use it for - unless the odd game is a stressful fps. Ham could probably list u a decent pc for £400 that does general stuff.

IP35v/e + Solid c2d + 2x2g could come to £250 or less. £150 for other stuff.
