IDE problems

Ok, I've got a K7N2, and I'm trying to plug in three hard drives. I've got two CD-ROMs too.

I plugged my first two HDs into the IDE1 slot, and the third one into the IDE2 slot. Then I plugged my CD-ROMs into IDE3.

Why won't my system read my CD-ROMs now?

I'm no expert but I don't think IDE likes having two identical devices on one lead.

Try putting you master HDD + Slave DVD/CD-ROM one one and the Master DVD/CD-ROM + Slave HDD on the other and see how you go :D

You are doing it the best way. Have you set one of the cd-rom drives to slave (jumper on back)?

That third IDE on the K7N2 Delta ILSR board's (AWESOME OMG BOARDS), is a Promise FasTrak Controller port. I don't reccomend putting CD-ROM drive's on it....

I'd do it the way Dave said. Just pick the two most similar drives and stick'em on IDE 1, and put their jumpers on CABLE SELECT (CS), I find that's the easiest if you fool with your drives a lot.

Then on IDE 2, you're Optical Drives, on CABLE SELECT.

IDE 3, Put you're other drive on there, MASTER. (Set jumper to MASTER)

sorry nick i strongly strongly recommend AGAINST cable select, it only asks for problems and you can never be 100% sure.

Really? Hmm, I've never really had any problems with Cable Select, and trust me dave--I've had more chipset's than you've had installation's of XP. But, yea, there can be issues with it, but..it's very uncommon.

well im glad you hve had good luck with it, and i m sure many do, btu when you are haivng problem with IDE devices, it is always best to use master/slave to eliminate the chance of cable select messing things up, but yes it is uncommen, do you see where i am coming from mate??

yeah. just got an idea! Do you have any spare IDE cables laying around to test out? IDE cables can, and DO go bad.

Thanks

Yeah, didn't expect such a quick response! Thanks guys!

I originally put the hard drive in IDE3 and it didn't work. I'll have to try the BIOS to see if it's enabled... I'll let you know what happens.
