i7 920 D0 Overclocking

I need Help to overclock my i7

P6T:SE
i7 920 D0 @2.66Ghz 27*Idle
12GB Corsair 1333MHz
7970 MSI Lightning
Corsair 650watt
Corsair H100i Liquid Cooler
ASUS Xonar 5.1 DG Soundcard

I'm looking to overclock my CPU to @4GHz, however I'm a little newbie when It comes to overclocking, I understand the basics but still a little confusing, Would any of you guys share some help?

Are these BIOS Settings Dangerous? & Do they make sense?

This is how I had mine setup when I had a 920

cpu ratio 20
base block 200
cpu voltage 1.3
cpu pll 1.9
qpi/dram voltage 1.25
ioh 1.2
ich1.3
dram 1.65 if you ram is 1.65 or 1.5 if that is what you ram is

if you have your base clock above stock and you leave your ram on auto it will try to make it run too fast so manually set that to 1600 mhz if that is what your ram is or lower if you need to

qpi link and uclk i had on auto and it worked for for entire year + that i had it

the one i had could also do 200 base clock x21 for 4.2ghz at 1.35v and it wasnt too hot but i dont recommend getting any higher than 200 base clock because i found the memory got unstable at that point. i found 4.0ghz 20x200 is a good sweet spot you can get there at 1.3 v or sometimes a little lower (but you cpu might suffer a bit performance vise if you lower the volts too much) and its not too hot so its a good long term clock in my opinion.

I'm going for a 21 Clock, I've been told the even numbers are harder to make stable, Also My ram is Rated for 1.5v, I forgot to show the overclock to 1156Mhz, I Want to get a stable overclock first, Nice but I do want to go for 4.2GHz as a first overclock, I'm a beginner not an enthusiast but thanks for the support.

21 should be easy enough if you have a d0 because those are the better ones. 20 is not harder though if anything its easier because its a lower clock speed. the only time i ever had trouble with stability was when the base clock was pushed over 200 so i'd say that is a good place to stop if you're looking for it to be stable. it does just depend on the chip some may be better than others but i always found mine was never any trouble and it probably would have had no trouble being stable at even higher clocks if the multiplier was unlocked. i had it at nearly 4.6ghz which was something like 215 base clock x21 but it won't wake up from sleep once you get that high with the base clock not to mention the type of volts and temperatures you get when you push it that high.


how long have you had a 920, are you just getting it now?
 
I have had this 920 for over 2 Years which has been sitting on stock speeds, Do you think I should try your settings?

Would you know anyone who would spend some time or a few mins overclocking over skype or something?

Yeah man i can do it but honestly it's not hard really. the even numbers are harder to keep stable thing is not something i've heard before and it is not the case as far as i know.

my sister has the old x58 board and 920 and i have it at 4.0 so i can go take a picture of the bios settings and you can just copy them if you want and chances are good that it will work fine esp if you have a decent motherboard and you have a d0 chip which were the better newer ones.

in a few minutes i will post a picture of the bios settings here okay

if you need extra help beyond that i am happy do chat some more about it.

the only thing that may be a difference with our x58 setup vs yours is that the x58 board we are running is a sabertooth x58 board which is supposed to be quiet good and it came out right near the end of the x58 lifespan so it kind of was one of the best x58 boards

your board may not perform quiet as well i cant say for sure but i wouldn't worry about it until you give it a try you might find that it works just as well as the sabertooth board.

I've had the chip - iirc - over four years; the motherboard is a gigabyte ex58 ud5 that I bought as an exact replacement for my board as it broke a week or so ago. Would I be able to achieve similar overclocks, would you know?

you can find out by downloading a cpu info tool like CPUZ and it will tell you there under stepping

4 GHz should by easy for most chips if they are d0's the one we have will do 4.2 at 1.35V but you need a good cooler and even then it gets very warm for sure if you run something like prime 95. 4.0GHz if you have a good cooler is a solid OC IMO and the chip I have will do it at 1.27V which is very good with the NH-D14 the temps are under 80'C for each core

what kind of cpu cooler do you have?


i cant guarantee anything though each chip is different

this is the highet i was able to get this chip to boot but others have gotten 4.6 and higher (dont go over 200 base block for a 24/7 overclock though because memory gets unstable at over 200. just do 200X20 or 200X21 going over 200 base clock is just for fun to see how high you can get it

Ahhh, I use cpuz (and gpuz), it's the revision: mine is stepping 4, revision c0/c1.

I don't want to do any damage or risk it before I upgrade; as I use it for rendering it can take a considerable amount of time, but it would put more stress on an older processor. A little extra, however, would be good though.

okay well the chip you have is an earlier version i guess i'm not sure how those perform but i do know that their stock 2.6ghz speed is very conservative. if you want a bit of a speed boost with temperatures that are still low try setting the base clock to 160 X21 that way you get get 3.6ghz and the volts shouldnt be much higher than stock speed volts so the temps shouldn't be much higher than stock temps depending on what cooler you have.

lock down your dram voltage and make sure you set your dram speed to whatever you ram is like 1600 mhz otherwise it will try to do it auto and it will may be too high
 
if you look a few posts up in this thread i posted pictures of all the bios settings i used you can use that as a reference point if you want :)
 
Yup, I've screen-shotted them and copied them to a laptop. :)

It has a locked multiplier though, so I have to overclock everything.

Think I'll wait until I upgrade.

Appreciate your help though.
