I5 2500K - ASRock Extreme4 Gen3

So I'm quite a noob at overclocking.

I've gotten my 2500k @ 4290.8 [43x] MHz just by using the multiplier in the ASRock UEFI.

On full load it runs @ 1.304V and temperatures are stable around 50-54°c spreadout over all 4 cores.

If I try to go higher [44-46x] my computer won't enter windows & I just get a black screen with a flickering "-" in the upper left corner: reset > multiplier x43 > boots up.

So I'm confused at what else I should change, everything is on auto, PLL overvoltage & speedstep enabled.

This is my first time overclocking & I'd first like to check with you guys, so I do everything correctly. Any advice?

You need to up the voltage, for 4.4ghz try 1.33v you might need more or get away with using less, depending on how good or bad your CPU is.

already tried that, even tried 1.40v fixed, (speedstep disabled) multiplier x45. I get the same black screen.

Am I missing some crucial setting?

Strange, no settings that I can think of that would cause that prob, speedstep only comes into play when in Windows same with the other settings to be honest. Try turning the load line calibration up or setting it higher if you can, could be that you have been unlucky and gotten a CPU that doesn't overclock well.

Have you manually set you RAM timings and frequency in the BIOS as well?

I've upped load line calibration and it got me into windows at 44x , but the instant I opened something it completely froze..

Not sure if it's just that your CPU is a bad overclocker or if it it's the motherboard because it could be either. The only way to find out for sure would be to try your CPU in another motherboard. As far as settings go though non of them would affect it not booting at a higher voltage apart from maybe LLC which will stop any Vdroop and if you have any power saving settings enabled try disabling them, also update your BIOS.

Could you post me a printscreen of your bios ? I know the settings are not going to match up but maybe I'm just missing something ..

Disable all powersaving mode settings c1 and such stuff.Enable speedstep.LLC set to 2.Disable igpu.Disable turboboost. All other settings as you have now.

Have you set Dram voltage,hyper-x blu need 1.65v to run properly.

I built a PC for my Friend using the ASrock Extream 3 gen 3.

I was kind of jelous because it looked stunning with the all black board and some Gold detailing.

Runs fine At stock speeds. But when I overclocked it to a mere 4.2ghz On a chip I know goes to 4.8 ghz easily. It did not like it at all. it botted into windows just Fine. But would fail every bench test. And when trying to play starcraft 2, it just blue screened.

But put it back to 3.3 ghz and it ran just fine.

Maybe it is a problem with their Bioses or something.

That's exactly what mine does. I can get up to 4,4GHz in windows, but freezes the second I start prime. no matter what settings

I think there's only one thing I can do, test it on another board.

Still I'm glad for getting 4,3 stable.

do asrock have a forum like asus do, if so have read about on their, see if anybody else is having problems running their chips overclocked on their new gen3 boards.

I will. Also on youtube there are people hitting 4.8 without really putting much effort in it with the same setup (board/cpu).

I just noticed something. my ram (2 dimms) arent in the dual channel slots. does this make a difference to overclocking ?

I'm going to change it now anyway. facepalm

What a shame, I really wanted to test this board. But this thread kinda gave me a turnoff. Anyways I know that this is an old topic and so forth. But you should check if you can update your BIOS, make sure to always have that up to date.

EDIT: Obviously I can see your validation signature, so I guess the problem is solved =P LOL
