Hyperthreading - Core i7 Series

Just how useful is this feature - in all lines of work/entertainment?

It really depends on what kinda stuff you are doing and whether it takes advantage of hyperthreading, personally I would prefer a CPU with hyperthreading than without.

It is a very vague question and it would probably be better to tell us what you use your puter for and then we could ascertain whether a CPU that supports hyperthreading is best suited to your needs :)

Hi Judderman and thanks for the response.

I already have an i7 920 (D0). My main uses are day-to-day surfing and working (Word, eBay etc.), gaming and watching videos. Was just wondering how much of a benefit the hyperthreading feature really is. I believe I'm correct in saying that if disabled, the core clock can be pushed further, right?

Hyperthreading basically splits your cores, so you pretty much get half the speed in non - multi core applications.

I actually get more FPS with hyperthreading disabled in most games.

Hmm... Are you sure about that mate??

I understand the theory you are suggesting but that seems very unlikely to me, and would of heard of such a massive impact if this was the case.

Besides which, multi-core is not the same as multi-threaded.

No that's wrong Sat. Hyperthreading attempts to use the unused cycles of a CPU to create another thread, to take full advantage of processing capacity. It certainly doesn't get half speed at all. Otherwise all quads would really be duals and duals would be singles and no-one would ever be happy.

Once again, probably based on whether the games are coded well or not.

Branching from that, it would include utils & apps.
