Hey guys,

Will try and keep this short... will this recent purchased PSU be a bit overkill and loose efficiency under the specs below and the upcoming upgrades?..

Current:

i7 2600K 3.4GHz
Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB 1600MHz
ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe
Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
Corsair Force Series 3" 180GB
WD Raptor 10000RPM 150GB
WD Green 3TB

Upcoming:

i7 4790K 4.0GHz
Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 1600MHz

As I'm afraid it's a bit overkill for the system and might not get up to around the "level of efficiency", if you get what I mean here?...

Thanks,
Chrazey

Well it has 750W but, i think you should get HX1000i one, just to be safe
Also, you got 4GB version or 8GB Version GPU?

A 1000W psu?, won't that be extremely overkill?

And it's the 4GB version.
32 Gb of RAM, and new i7
750W wont be overkill, its basicly just how much you need.
750W is just fine, you are using AMD GPU anyway xD
You might even have enough left for second GPU, not sure though

Erhm yeah... don't get a 1000 Watt PSU.

For single-card high end rigs I'd say 650 Watt is the sweetspot, especially with Nvidia cards. With your 290x though, which is barely energy efficient at all, 750 is definitely a bit more than you need, but no massive overkill.

You could get away with a 650 Watt PSU if you want but I wouldn't say it's worth swapping if you already have the HX750i

HX750i sounds perfect to me. I don't rightly understand what your trying to say about losing efficiency because it's slightly overkill.

It's likely your rig will draw from 150W to 450W which would translate to about 20% to 60% load for the PSU keeping it nicely within the peak efficiency operating region of 92-93%. Perfectly well matched PSU tbh.

That it's like Feronix says... that it will draw max of 500W and therefore not reaching the 92-95% efficiency. Ie, loosing efficiency... hope you get what I mean now.

Do notice though how the graph skips from 50% to 100%. If your system does pull 500 Watts, or 66% of the 750s capability, the graph would be around this point:

So you'd still have pretty much over 90% efficiency which is great!

Ignore this..... I honestly thought he was joking - he must be new.

Haha yes, even I thought a 1000W PSU would be extremely overkill, as I know a 850W is more than capable of doing dual graphics cards lol.v

Well I gotta say that the very last sentence "Perfectly well matched PSU tbh.", gave me a huge smile on my face :)

You should include something like a "thumbs up" smiley, or does it already exist?...

Also guys, what CPU would you recommend me, for the best fit?... is a 4790K a bit overkill or?... as I'm doing gaming and will be doing some video rendering as well and would like to somewhat "futureproof" my CPU for a few years. My current 2600K works like a beauty, but want an mATX board and 32GB of ram, so need the MSI Z97M-G43, Socket-1150 and another set of Corsair Vengeance Pro Blue 16GB 1600MHz.

Thanks!

Stupid question, but can a PSU have coil whine?... as I came across the same sound on my new HX750i that I had on my 2 970's :(...

Is there a way to test if it's the PSU that does the coil whine or if it's the GPU?...

As my old 6950 never made a noise, but then my friend ealier today told me that it wasn't a high end card. His old 560 never made a sound and his 680 does a bit more.
Meaning that a high end card like this will never be silent... but if it's coil whine, then that is a different story.
