HTPC advice scavenge build

Hello peeps! I've been wondering what to do with my golden oldie. If I would just scrap her, or give her away or make it into a HTPC.

Thing is, converting her into a HTPC would give her another purpose before silicon heaven. Which I would like, since I worked my ass off to be able to buy her one summer, soon 8 years ago.

I would like to use her as a Media platform to play movies in 1080p and to play music aswell. She would be hooked up to an AV receiver via HDMI.

So specs are as follows:

CPU: AMD Opteron 165 1,8 Ghz Dual core, Socket 939
Mobo: Asus A8N32 SLI-Deluxe Nforce 4
GPU: Geforce 7600 GT
RAM: Kingston ValueRAM 2GB DDR400
Case: Antec P180
PSU: Aspire 520W
CPU Fan: Thermaltake Big Typhoon
GPU Fan: Zalman something

So basically my questions are...

- Is it worth it? Putting time and effort in a 8+ year old rig
- Can she run 1080P? I remember having lags when playing FullHD movies before, dunno if it had to do with old OS (winXP sp2) or GPU or what?
- Am I better off spending ~350€ on a brand new one? Thank you Feronix for your ultimate guide ;)

The Antec P180 is a beast, waaaay to big for HTPC use. So I plan to scratch build a wooden case from plywood about ATX size and just make it epic.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome. :)

I'm not going to give you the best advice, I'll let others do that but if you do invest in a HTPC instead and you end up scrapping your old build. Why not see what fun you can have with it. Put it through its paces if you can until it screams for mercy. Force it into silicon heaven.

Cheers mate. Let's see what fun we can have with it. I keep it at my other home, so I'll get it in 3 weeks when I go visit.

Expect some whacky mods ;)
