I've not got any exact figures for you, but I remember someone telling me that a PC uses up less electricity in a day that boiling a single kettle of water or using an iron on a few shirts.

Not sure how true it is...but hey, it'll shut her up ;)

I have one of those at my dads. Will get it tonight and put it on my server. I tested it with a kettle the other day and it shot up to 1400watts :o

Isn`t there something u can plug between the mains and u`r pc that will clock the power ?

All it`d do is measure the current over a period, voltage more or less a given - seems a simple device to me ?!??!

Infact, in the current climate, if some1 were to run a few 1000 of these up with kits/stuff from maplin and sell then - u`d make a fortune. Probably with little outlay as u could get a grant initially. Tell the gov u`r making an "Environmental effectiveness meter", color the thing bright green and u`d rake it in.

In the interest of fairness you could offer to help ur mom with the power bill. Im not sure about over there but power (gas especially) has doubled over here in the last year.

My utility bills went from $120 to $270 a month during winter.

Like the others have posted the comp should take about the same as a small light bulb (60 watts) LCDs are about half that but if the LCD is in power saving mode practically no power is used.

Unlucky Sam! :(

My Dad is in control of Power.. and he is a little bit of a geek.. and Understands Folding (to an extent).

But maybe if your mum does take this approach.. maybe you should pay a little? Just like what Mark said.

Urm, hate too take your mums side. But when i was leaving my pc on 24/7 our bill climbed from an average £220 too almost £320... That was a single quarter.

Right, i now have the power meter plugged into my server. Server specs are as follows;

700W FSP PSU

Abit AB9 Pro

E6300

4GB DDR667 Ram

3 400GB HDD

1 ODD

I should mention i buggered the RAID up, so its currently rebuilding it. That means the hard drives are at full speed. This is also folding on both cores at full speed.

Right, down to the readings. EEK!

244.5 Volts

0.58 Amps

133 Watts

49.9Hz

I'll post the KwH when it gives me a good reading.

I have to take your Mums side aswell, when I left my home server on 24/7 our bill shot up so I was forced to turn it off.

Hmmmm I run mine daily non stop it's just always on, makes me wonder just how much my bill would drop if I shut it down at night.

Snag is it nearly always is downloading or uploading something....

well once my server has rebuilt the raid, im gonna get some figures with/without running f@h

just to see what extra power the cpu uses at full speed.
