How much of a bottleneck would a Q8200 place on a 6870?

Hi guys. I have a Q8200 at stock 2.33GHz. I know that it will definitely bottleneck a 6870. What I want to know is by how much in comparison to say a 2500k. I know that a 2500k can't bottleneck a 6870. I just want to know that if for example a 6870 runs at 100% on a 2500k, then comparatively how would it run on a Q8200? The particular game I want to run it for is BF3.

You should just search for I7 900 reviews and see the comparison with the 775 socket cpu's. Pretty shocking fps botleneck imo. SB 2500k is even better then the 900 series in games, so you do the maths.

Dont you know anyone with a 2500k set up? you could test your 6870 with BF3 and get the exact answear your looking for.

I know him personally and I could check for him, but he hasn't bought the card yet and is basing his decision to buy the card on what he gets back from this thread.

Before I moved to SB I had a Q6600@3.8 and for a brief time(about a month before it exploded) I had a xfx 6870 black edition and that thing flew!

I would imagine that as long as you are sitting at 3Ghz+ it would be fine.

Thats my problem right there though. The bios is oem locked on the crappy mobo im using so its either make do with the Q8200 at stock or replace the whole system which I plan on doing when Ivybridge releases.

Like Nepas said, it would help some if you oc the cpu.

Maybe this can be helpfull to look at: My link

I can't mate, as I mentioned above my bios is oem locked

I'm fixing to run dual 260's (216 core models) on a E8400 rig

I bet the cpu bottle necks them lmao

a Q8200's bottleneck is like a car accident on the side of the interstate with a driver in each lane halting to 30mph to see a overturned milk truck wondering how many cows it took to fill it.

core 2 quads are still on par with amds latest offerings for gaming performance but the newer intels do lead the way.

yes a faster cpu will get more out of the card but gaming performance is still more about gpu power than that of the cpu that feeds it.

you could argue that your hdd or ram is also a "bottleneck" as the latest ssd and ddr3 @2.5ghz are faster and yeilds more performance too, but thats the case for everybody.

yes faster kit will open other parts up more but is that extra % of performance worth the cost to you?

i have a c2q, amd x4 and a 25k here and tbh the only time i know the difference is when i look at benchmark scores. well and when i try and warm my feet on the air coming out as sandy is a cool running chip and crap as a heater :|

gaming wise i imagine i get better min fps but it is still the same gpu that its feeding and it has the final say on my fps.

if i was you i would buy the gpu and better cooling and see how high you can get your fsb

Some awesome points there

. His BIOS is locked though, so he can't OC, unless you know a trick!!!

setfsb?

will be voltage limited but should get some more out of it but then its down to the ram and the ratios you have open(if any

)

thats a bit of a bitch tbh, a new cooler you can keep but i cant say buying a new mobo to oc that chip is a wise move either.

looks like this gpu could be the last upgrade for the setup in this config and maybe your next move should be a new cpu/mobo/ram to get the most out of this gpu.

He just wants BF3 to run smoothly on med-high settings for the time being and he is looking to upgrade to ivy when he has the cash.

tell you the thruth low isnt bad looking either, just the draw distance drops but that cpu and gpu should do med no worries.

I've tried low settings and they are pretty good looking still

. At 1080p medium settings should be attainable at least as I've played on low settings on a 5770 at 1080p and it was pretty smooth.

Could try having a look here http://www.rebelshavenforum.com/sis-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

they have modded BIOS'es for OEM locked boards(used one from there years ago on my parents pc)

Yeah I found a bios on another site. I haven't tried to flash the motherboard with the modded bios. I want to be careful so that I don't end up bricking the mb if the bios is incompatible/flash goes wrong. My mb is an oem model so I doubt it's going to be a friendly overclocker. I would need a cooler for it as well but don't know if it's worth it to be honest after seeing that the q8200 is a terrible overclocker.
