Roughly how long with my phenom 965 be good enough for games that are yet to come out ?. I know its an older cpu but its all i could afford for now :)

How long is a bit of string. Its all relative and its something only you can answer.

If its all you can afford just use it till you can afford a better one, bit of a silly question tbh.

Tom's hit the nail on the head there. I have a i5-2500K, and it's good enough for what I need. It'll be good enough for a number of years. If I had a i7-3770K, that would be good enough, If I had a Xeon E3-1200, then that would be good enough.

Usually, there is something better than you already have. You can guarantee there will be something better soon. If you can't afford something better or newer, then what you have is good enough. :)

However, if you really want to know, it's already useless because it's AMD and you need to get an Intel CPU ASAP! /troll ;)

Yeh completely depends. If games become more intensive on one or two cores, it'll start to struggle more than if they start making use of all the four cores of the processor - and no one really know which direction that would take.

Also depends if you want to be maxing out every game on ultra settings etc, or just having the games playable.

Yup, too many variables. We cannot predict how intensive games will be in the future and it depends on what settings you like to play at.

You could try using a hardware monitor to track your CPU usage. I suggest hwinfo64. If you open the sensor screen then you can create a log file which will track your component usage.

A AMD 4 core should be fine for the moment but it really does depend on the game. Are you overclocking it?

im not overclocking right now seem to be ok with anything i use it for. so i think i get the homer award fot this question then :P

Dont expect overclocking a phenom to yield massive performance gains...
I used to have a 965 - mine was a good chip and I could only get it stable up to just over 4ghz - which provides very little performance increase tbh

Yea that's about right. A touch over 4 is what I got from my 1100t (although I managed 4.2 if I cherry picked the best 4 cores). It's still better with a mild overclock than none though.
