How are YOU connected?

I wanna know how you guys are connected to the internet, what network equipment, what you do using that connection, anything rly :D

I'll go first :)

I am on a wireless connection using a Sitecom WL-350 300N Dual Band Media router(got it a couple of days ago after our sitecom wl-308 gaming router died) and a Sitecom WL-321 300N usb gaming adapter.

I mainly play FPS games, browse the web, and watch vids on youtube. No LAN things going on rly, we don't have multiple gaming PC's connected to the network, just one xbox 360 and an apple macbook, no external hdd's connected.

So.. anybody want to share their network setup with us? :D

I'm connected to the internet through a cheapo DSL router. Onto that I have:

1). 100MBps 8 way switch to my bedroom with PS3, 360, PS2, Xbox and occasionally a laptop

2). 1000MBps 8 way switch (Netgear) to 2 pc's in Dad's study

3). 1000MBps 8 way switch (TP Link), going onto my rig, my benching rig/server, my old rig, the old laptop, the new laptop and also onto a 3com 100MBps 24port switch going onto my pico itx pc, my eee and my really old rig...which is awaiting a new cpu.

4). Sometimes my mum's work laptop

Wireless goes to my psp, occasionally my eee and sometimes my friends' pcs.

BT Home Hub hardwired with CAT6

to Netgear FS116 10/100 16 port switch

to PC, Xbox, Laptop.

Wireless to all other devices

Kids PC, Iphones, other Laptops etc...

No home network as such.

Got a BT Voyager to deal with the incoming net then its straight into a netgear 1gb switch, which feeds my main rig, the line out to the shed and the 300MB/s Netgear access point. In the shed there is another Netgear switch feeding my server/fold rig and what ever rig Im working on.

50mb connection ->Netgear RangeMax WNDR3700 -> 30m long ethernet -> my pc

wireless N -> xbox 360

thats it lol

Running an edimax modem, which connects to dads pc, mums laptop, PVR and Netgear 1000mb/s switch. The switch feeds my brothers pc, my laptop and xbox.

No wireless for me, my mums scared of it frying my brain :S

NetGear Router controlling incoming --> 3Com switch for server/games machine/xbox/office machine --> 3Com Wireless AP for wireless access.

Craptastic ntl cablemodem, going to a D-Link 855, routing to 1x 8 and 1x4 port netgear 1g switch.

Still not set it up as I want - just works well atm.

nothing complex here

ntl 250 modem (Virgin 20M), connected to a d-link 655 which supplies 3 PC's through the gigabit ports and access for one laptop through the wireless

Course when I get to uni it gets even better. I'll have my server managing the internet connections, then DHCPing to the switches so noone notices exactly how many pcs are connected...(6 including the sever)

ive got 16meg sky broadband (goes to 20meg on the 10th) and the netgear router you get from them, so nothing special here

my pc, spare pc - gigabit netgear switch - draytec vigor 2800

my laptop, spare laptop - wireless to belkin wireless cable router - draytec vigor 2800 - internet

BT 8mb > BT homehub (i swear its the worst router in the history of routers > 50m ethernet cable through the loft to my room and my main rig.

Then wireless to my mac, ipod etc.

I'm having trouble with internet + phone which sucks rly.. I've got UPC 30MB Fiber Power but recent speedtests tell me I'm only getting like 5-15 MB, and my phone line is dead.

So, my stab at this one:

Location 1 (primary):

- DSL/IPTV connection, 12Mbps/512Kbps (I'm too far away from the Telco office to get 16Mb/1Mb, and there are no other viable ISPs :(), managed by one of the worst routers I've EVER encountered, the Alcatel 2700HGV-2 Gateway. Unfortunately, the bloody thing has to be the router, else the IPTV box will not be able to access the network.

This router has 4 10/100Mbps ports, one of which is connected to the IPTV box; the second port connects to dad's PC, and the third one connects to a D-Link 5-port unmanaged Gigabit switch one floor down from the router.

This switch is actually the heart of the network, since the WHS machine and my gaming rig (which doubles as an HTPC) both connect to it. The other two ports are used when building new machines or when I need to connect my laptop to a wired network.

Speaking of laptops, mine usually connects directly to the router, but since there is some sort of hardware/software limitation on the router side my ISP never bothered to correct, I'm stuck with a 9Mbps connection (don't ask).

Location 2 (parents' house):

If you thought the other setup was rather weird (it is, actually), then get ready for a convoluted discription.

The main router (THE worst router I've EVER came across hands down, something from Netgear I don't even want to try to remember the name) handles both the cable and VoIP over cable connection (so I can't get out of this one, neither, If I swapped the router, POTS would be a no go, and I actually still need POTS). It manages a 18Mbps/1Mbps cable connection so bad it crashes with over 50 simultaneous connections (so uTorrent and such are tricky at best, and the ISP only makes it worse with the severe traffic shapping going on).

Since I can't have long cable runs from the coax outlet to the router (because of noise issues, I've been told), I have to run around 15m of both Ethernet and phone cables (I should have run both through the same cable, but I didn't have the patience to do it at the time) all around the room, up and down archways, etc.. Sad sight, I tell you.

So, this router connects to... another router, which has for many years served as the main wireless AP to the house (I never actually used the router part, but when I bought it it was dirt cheap, and it came with a wireless card, which I actually needed :p), as well as the main switch. It's an USR model, 8054, if memory serves me right.

The USR AP/switch connects to the mini server I have going on (case is 18x18x18cm in size... hehehe), as well as the main PC.

And then things get trickier. You see, the house has three floors, and there is actually one more computer in the basement. Since I can't run an Ethernet cable that long (my mother would kill me), Wireless was the solution: the main switch/AP has a wireless repeater one floor below it (also from USR, at that time, like 7 years ago, finding repeaters that worked together was A B***H), to serve both the PC on the basement, my mother's netbook and my brother's notebook when he's around. My notebook usually takes advantage of the dedicated, closer, wireless connection on the router, but sometimes I also connect it to the main switch.

So, in total, two wireless networks (different channels, of course), too many cables, and a headache every time I fire up uTorrent.

In the future, I hope I get to ditch IPTV on my main location (switch to standard cable, so I don't have to worry about only being able to watch TV on one location in the house), and get Fiber (yeah, right, like 10 years from now) for Internet duties, or simply stay with DSL (love it, the ISP is the same one, but IPTV SUCKS because of the bloody router limitations); on my parents' house, I hope I switch back to DSL for the Internet (cable is just fine, but they suck on the POTS implementation, and the Internet connection is atrocious).

Cheers.

Miguel

I've just set up my uni systems:

100MB/s network port to my server, DHCP to my switch through its other network port. 1GB/s switch to old laptop (on my bedside table), my big rig, my gaming laptop and my 100MB/s switch (24 port), which then goes to the pico and eeePC.

This is within a 120sqft room...pointless but quite cool :D
