Home surround system problem

Had a Sony DE485E for a while now and while it could probably do with upgrading I don't want to as it works fine.

Problem is no matter what settings I have it on I can not get the 2 surround speakers to operate, Sub, Centre, Left and Right are all fine but nothing from the 2 surround speakers.

I've done the usual, reset factory settings, checked wiring, swapped speakers around to make sure they work but all no joy even when I press the surround button it just says 'NOT USED'????????

Anyone any ideas????????

Aye - step 1: Check that the source is sending a rear surround signal... Amp stating "not used" implies either manually disabled in a menu somewhere, or it's autosensing nothing coming on that path via a spdif or optical cable, which means surround output at the source could be disabled.
