Holy Crap! Wrong PCI-E Slot?!?

Well after investigating whether a 8800 series card will fit in my case with my watercooling set up as it is, I noticed that my graphics card has always been installed in the wrong PCI-E slot!!!!

Even though my motherboard's pci-e's are both x16 (if used in Sli), I think that when using a single card, only the blue slot is x16.

This is fantastic news for me, as it means that I can fit a next gen card in without altering my current loop too much, as well as meaning that I may see a slight performance improvement by swapping the graphics card over.

Such a stupid mistake, but I'm so glad I spotted it now! It's only taken a year!!!:p

On more moden mobos. When you use a single card say in the x4 bandwith, x16 length slot. but no card in the x16, x16, do you get the full x16 for the bottom?

Basicly are motherboards smart enough to allocate PCI-E lanes?
