Hogwarts Legacy PC Performance Review & Settings Guide

Very good work. Very throughout and detailed.

It's nice to find a game that really pushes hardware.

I am interested to see if AMDs 3D cache CPUs will significantly benefit this game since they will be able to store far more data on die rather than constantly fetch from memory.

I feel sorry for the people missing out on a great game

I don't, At all. These people who are 00.0001% of the general world population live in a fantasy world of their own making and then try to dictate to the entire planet how people should think, Talk and act... they can go kick rocks.

Well it's installing now, i think it's an average game but looks decent enough, i have the films wouldn't say i'm a uber fan, but there i dont care about jkr trans or harry potter i just like the idea of a relaxing game that has eyecandy.

Should keep me busy inbetween my racing thou saying that my backlog is massive lol

it's cold this morning soon some forza H5 thou did pick up a few other wheel based games the stand i got makes a huge difference no more shaking monitors while fighting with the wheel in rally games :D

The game supports Family Sharing on Steam, so this is a good option to test it if you have a friend who owns the game on Steam!

My 1070 has 8GB of VRAM, but my 4770K won't help me at high settings, I guess. So FSR2.0 + medium/low settings + 60FPS cap at 1080p?

Sorry for the late replies folks. Had to quickly go AFK after publishing the review as I was heading away for the weekend with the wife. A nice treat around valentines and all that.

Reminder for any husbands/wives. boyfriends/girlfriends out there that aren't aware that valentine's day is tomorrow.

How are you able to measure fps? Are you using an external tool like Fraps?

Currently, we are using CapFrameX. It is much more accurate than FRAPs, and gives much better percentile framerate data. It also supports the latest APIs. It's a very useful tool.

Great work on this, OC3D team. First game to see a real benefit of using DLSS3.

Definately. It helps us bypass CPU limits, which is very useful given how strong console CPUs are now. When consoles are optimised for Zen 2, PC gamers need something much stronger to push far ahead.

Thanks. We will be doing a lot of CPU retesting soon for future CPU reviews. Stronger GPU to make games more CPU-limited etc. New games tested. Not sure if we will test Hogwarts Legacy, but will likely give the 5800X3D a go with this game to have a look at the impact.

From what I've read a fair few people even with a 4090 are still seeing GPU usage dipping down to 80% which means DLSS3 isn't working like it should.

This game is very CPU-limited, and DLSS uses s different part of the GPU to bypass that. DLSS 3 is working as it should, but the traditional areas of the GPU are not being taxed fully due to the CPU limits.

If a game was CPU-limited before DLSS 3 and not using the full GPU, it will continue to not use the full GPU afterwards, as DLSS 3 uses different parts of the hardware to generate its additional frames.

Thanks v much appreciated. Trying to tune up a 5600 & 6650 combo :)

Too bad DLSS3 has some major visual issues that make it a quite bad experience, notably the jittering/stuttering due to vsync being forced off. Gsync shows it's working, but it feels like it's broken.

Then there's the artifacts. Moving text is corrupted, text box backgrounds, the image has ghosting (made even worse due to TAA ghosting).

It's a "pick your poison" type thing. Smooth but low framerate, or jittery high framerate with visual bugs.

People have been trying to improve things with .ini tweaking, but with a 4090, these improvements are irrelevant. The game is a bad experience unless you have the very latest top end CPU's, notably AMD's X3D.

A month after release, no real performance fixes (just VRAM changes which bungled up more stuff). Wonder if it'll ever get improved.

Running a 13900K, DDR5 6600 and 4090 I've had no real issues, Jittering or otherwise... or I simply haven't noticed them.

The only thing I don't like is for some reason they decided to use really low quality RT reflections and forgo RTGI which would make a massive difference to the feel of the general atmosphere and lighting.
