Hiper Type-r 580w + x1900XT

Hey there,

Just a general enquiry... I read on something on another forum after searching through google but was unsure whether it was true/false.

My psu has two 12v rails:

+12V1 1.0A - 20A

+12V2 1.0A - 18A

according to what I have read, a dual rail setup with the above outputs isn't recommended with the 1900xt and may lead to instability.

I say I'm unsure because:

my psu is SLi ready meaning that it should be 'okay' running, say for example, SLi 7900gts..

can someone please clear this up!

:)

It all depends on the rail layout on the PSU (what powers what).

Most likely (and hopefully) your psu will have +12v2 dedicated to PCI-e, which should have no problems running a single X1900XT card, but won't be able to power 2x X1900XT's.

Nvidia cards use less power, and quite possibly your PSU is SLI certified for something like the 7800 series.

Yep what XMS said is spot on. He is the PSU guru ;) It all depends on what those rails are powering; because the X1900XT is a power hungry card. :)

The only way you'll know is if you test it, but I've seen & examined one of those PSU's in person and all I can say is they're very light and the wiring is on the thin side.

It's reccoemnded that if you have an X1K card that you have a PSU with one large +12v rail. Too bad there aren't many single 12v rail PSU's around that are *uber* high with the wattage.

The Tagan Zeus 560w has a single 36a rail as i recall.

As for Hyper, i read somewhere a few days back that their internals are made by a lesser respected psu manufacturer.

You mean Silverstone Zeus? ;)

Aye, the Zeus is supposed to be a beast. Just a bit below PCP&C & Zippy in terms of quality (go Etasis! :))

Yeah, i've revieweed both the 560 and 750 models, both were rock solid.

I was just looking at the same Hipper psu. I think I won't bother with that one know.

What about the OCZ ModStream 520W Modular PSU, have you heard any good or bad things with them?

I have read quite a few good reviews of them. They should be going fairly cheap now as they are EOL and being replaced by the EvoStream.

Just seen a Hiper 580W Type-M Black PSU - SLI Certified with APFC for £52.82.

Are these the same spec as the Type-R version but with no modular connectors and do you know if there any good or would you say the OCZ is better?
