higher temp after replacing tim

I have gigabyte gtx 570 super overclock and before replacing stock thermal compound I used to get around 58c during load. Now I have replaced the stock Tim with Arctic mx-2 and my load temp is about 73c. What is wrong? I tried applaying small amounts with the rice method to very large amounts and spreading it, and I got the same result every time.

Did you properly clean the surfaces between reapplications? With some form of surface purifier and lint free cloths preferably.

Have you replaced the cooler correctly? Are the screws tight enough for example?

The screws are tight and I have cleaned the surfaces with a substance that has alcohol in it and a kitchen paper. I have noticed that I have somehow managed to make lots of very light scratches on the surface of the GPU cooler copper surface. Could this be the reason?

I'm preety angry right now. My GPU could do almost 1ghz, 1180mv hitting around 88c which is amazing result for gtx 570 and now I'm on stock 845mhz, 1000mv and its hitting 85c :((((

A substance that has alcohol in it? Beer? Whisky? Antifreeze?

Either use 99% isopropyl alcohol, or proprietary CPU cleaner. Also, do not use kitchen towel, use a soft lint free cloth. Pull it apart and start again.

Well I wouldn't have thought it would have made 15°C+ difference, but it's a good place to start, and it's always good practice. It's probably not the case, but does MX-2 have a break in period?

Did you move the thermal pads on the VRAM at all? Again, probably won't be the case but if some moved to slightly the wrong place it could be preventing the heatsink from making good thermal contact with the IHS.
